I am new to using topdresses and  wondered which ones have been used with good results. i have been told winners edge is a good one, but when i looked on the internet i saw lots of them that looked good. My steers have 45 days and 70 days til fair and i want something that will increase appetite, help hair growth, and stimulate muscle/ weight gain. I noticed some topdresses have very high protein levels and average fat, while others are high in fat and medium for protein. im assuming the protein rich ones will add more muscle and the fatty ones will add more finish/hair. is this correct? I think my steers will finish( the one with 45 days could use a little pushing). what type would be best for my needs?

calf manna or show bloom both work well. I've found that they tend to eat calf manna a little better.

I have had great results with Calf Manna, but last year started using Sure Champ pellets from Vitaferm.  Goldenflo is a must with either product and 1 oz per 6 lbs feed raises the fat 1 % in the ration, I usually feed 1/2 lb Sure Champ and 2 ozs Goldenflo with ration morning and night.

Increased fat is going to burn the hair and is only going to add finish. Increased proetin will add muscle and hair.
I have also had good luck with showbloom.

I guess this stuff works for steers even though its considered horse feed? I was considering Maximum Gain from Shoberts Feed and Final Cover from Show feed inc. Would these add appetite and finish? Muscle??

I tried it & I'm sold.  Liked it MUCH better than the liquid fats.  AAOK, is spot on... depending upon how much you feed, it will add weight & condition quickly,  plus it will really make the hair shine.  Like AAOK, I would definately recommend it.

how much does does natural glo cost?

It's not cheap... maybe $1 per lb. ?  It also has 13% protein & a decent amount of Lysine.

We showed for 5 years before learning the correct way to feed.  Our family had no prior experience, and had no choice other than to rely on the "local experts" & any other advice we could gather.  (there were no forums at that time)  I had the good fortune to work as a field rep. for Moormans for just a little over a year.  I think I learned more in that one year about bovine nutrition than a I could have in a lifetime from any other resource.  Too bad the company had such a sorry dealer policy, or I would probably still be with them today.  Once I had the tools, feeding show calves was easy.  There have been lots of products come and go, and I'm sure many, if not most, have the possibility to help, but only if you really understand how a ruminant animal works.  With this said, good luck to all & happy feeding.  One thing.....DON'T FORGET THE MINERAL!!!!!!!
