Who Made Who the 2009 Champion of Steer Planets Bull Bracket

1pic347.jpg

After 600+ bull nominations was whittled down to a field of 72 bulls it is Who Made Who (WMW) who outlasted them all over seven rounds to be declared the Champion of Steer Planets 2009 Bull Bracket. WMW with out a doubt earned every inch on the tournament road. Besting such Clubby legends as Sugar Ray, Heat Seeker, Heat Wave and Meyer 734. WMW also proved terminal for the maternal bulls Sonny and Cunia. WMW presumably named by a fan of the Australian band AC/DC was born in 1996, the breeder of WMW was Gallagher Show Cattle of Westside, Iowa  and the bull eventually became one of the headliners for Phil Lautner Bull Battery at Lautner Farms.

From Lautners Farms Web Site:
“Who Made Who needs no introduction. No other bull has dominated the show ring and went on to produce the best club calf mothers around. Who Made Who daughters have proven themselves to be the best producing cows around in terms of high sellers and champions. Who Made Who is a true legend that has left a mark on the industry and continues to sire great ones today.”

With reports of WMW passing this past year we have seen an increase in the cost of his straws but for the most part since WMW has been in service he has been an extremely affordable game changer with a unit of WMW staying around the $20.00 mark in most cases.
Another factor which sets WMW apart from most clubby bulls is his TH/PHA free status.
In the end I think it was WMW’s impressive run as “The Bull of State Fair Champions” coupled with the fact that his females have become great assets in many herds across the country that set WMW apart from the rest of the field this year.

Other talking points about this years bracket:

Rounding out the final four for this year was Traveler 6807 and Sonny.

Notable Bulls not making the final four: HeatWave “for the second year in a row” Heatseaker “Last year final four participant” Meyer 734 “Last years Champ”

Remitall On-Line receives the Cinderella award this year for winning the Hereford bracket. Remitall On-Line was the 5th seeded Hereford.

WMW vs HeatWave had the most combined votes of any match-up, 134.

WMW had the highest amount of votes for a single match-up ,110. (Sugar Ray 13)

The lowest amount of votes for a single match-up goes to OAHE Wind for receiving only 1 vote against Wyoming Wind (61) in their second round match-up

The closest match-up of the tourney happened in round #1 when 600U beat Built Right by just two votes, 46 to 44 .

Many thanks goes to those who helped with this years bracket and especially to Steer Planets owners for providing us with a forum in which such a contest can take place.

Till Next Fall

I know there will be some on here that will think this win means absolutely nothing.Mostly from purebred breeders, [not all of course] and the people who hate show cattle breeders. Just for those folks, I say listen up.WMW and some of the other clubby bulls are more maternal than some may realize. I know of some 30 head of steers sired by WMW that topped feelot sales as Fats at a market in Colorado. As far as the club calf cow market , he has NO competition except from Cunia and Full Throttle and maybe Powerplant, and only then if crossed on the older Angus bloodlines and a few Maines and Simmy's.I have been at this club calf bussiness for a long time,[getting away from the non caring, unless you have big bucks, purebred associations] and I believe WMW is not only a great club calf producer, but one of the best bulls period to breed to most any kind of cow, including the eared cattle of south Texas.he is the only bull that I know of to be too straight on his hind wheels and on his front end, but rarely if ever passed those traits on to his offspring. Not until some of my friends convinced me to use him, after two calf crops in 1999 and 2000 did I start using him.If you want to classify him as only a club calf bull, thats ok too,he just happens to be the best club calf bull that was ever created period. I say this being a big Full Flush and Full Throttle believer.

I guess in my mind the advent of the low percentage registry made Who the ultimate breeding bull, and he wins because he(IMO) deserves to.  He is probably the only true clubby bull that is total calving ease and is used across the board by purebred breeders because of that.  Many of the bulls in this voting are great bulls, but only in one breed or produce one type, Who has been able to produce great ones from all types and breeds and that in my mind is what brings him to the front of the line.

I like WMW, but am surprised that he can win this competition. I think that it reflects on the majority of voters being club calf breeders more than on the bull. I also have to disagree with you TMJ in your statement about WMW rarely passing on structure problems. I watch closely how much WMW blood and more accurately, Take Charge blood that we have around. It's my belief that WMW is hugely responsible for a lot of the front end buckled over club calves. I admit that it is hard to be in the clubbie world and not use WMW blood. I voted for him in the final, but again am surprised that he had made it that far. For me now, today, there are soo many bulls that I would use B4 WMW. No offence intended for WMW lovers. In his time and day WMW was it and Damion Gallegher bred some cattle changing bulls there in the early to mid 90s.JMO.

Maybe the reason the vote total was so low (before it needed to be extended) was because they were clubbu bulls.

I didn't vote for WMW since the worst train wreck for a calf I have ever seen was out of WMW. Dead cow and then 4 hours later dead calf. The calf had legs so straight and bad it looked like 4 sticks.

From the perspective of someone who is relative new to the club calf business, WMW appeals to me more than any other club calf bull, primarily because he is so versatile and can be used to produce useful females as well as steers.  Another big plus is the fact that he is not a TH or PHA carrier.  As a simmental breeder, it puzzles me as to how a bull like heatwave and other defect carriers could become so popular.  Cattle like that would never make it inot our registery.  When making breeding decisions it sure is nice not to have to worry about genetic defects popping up--just ask an Angus breeder.  Guess it all comes down to producing top sellers and profit.  Nothing wrong with that,  but I wish we could keep the cattle clean and sound in the process.
