I would have to agree on showing heifers!  With that said, I did chase the steer glory when I was younger!

After seeing the Fort Worth steer show it would be very difficult to compete. In Fort Worth 60 came in the ring, 50 got the "GATE", they didn't even get to show. At least with a heifer you have something when you done showing. My kids will show a county steer and we will take heifers to Jr. Nationals and State Majors.

There is no doubt Steer Showing has the greatest possibility for monetary payback; however % chances may be low.  I conclude from observation that the vast majority showing Steers have purchased animals.  I believe the % of bred and owned animals to be much higher for those showing Heifers.  I say that the bred and owned show are what it's all about, and should be regarded as such!  Breeding the Great Show Steer vs. the Great Show Heifer is vastly different.  I give the edge % to Steers.  They have to have "the look"; angular, muscle, bone, hair, and style.  However, things such as structural correctness and genetic defects can be cast aside in breeding selection.  Breeding the great Heifer requires meeting much more criteria with the finished product.  The show Heifer has to produce much more than a few good steaks.  I'll admit right here that many Judges today are either not qualified to Judge Breeding Stock, or have just given in to the pressure of their "business partners".  But, there are still many great Judges who can find the best Breeding Heifer in the ring.

All this said, It is my opinion that both breeding, and showing Heifers, is much more difficult, and much more rewarding.  However, I absolutely do not believe showing Steers of Heifers to be the best thing in the world.

I 100% agree with the bred and owned statement. That's where you separate the men from the boys as far as I am concerned. If you have the money it's real easy to go and purchase an amazing animal. Breeding and showing your own stock, that's what I've got to respect with folks. I'd love to see some of these big shows have classes for bred and owned. Boy wouldn't that throw some of these guys who consistently buy high dollar steers and heifers out of the water. I think it would give a whole new respect to the competition. Don't see it happening though, too much politics and high dollars running the programs. To think their animals that they sold would get less exposure and the limelite might shine on someone else!

I like showing breeding heifers & bulls the best. for us, we don't have any longer kids & don't qualify for many steer shows. also we use our own & just can't compete, although we'd do fairly well at county fair. Our bull calves are banded & sent to feedlot if they don't make the grade to be a bull candidate.
Also we pretty much show our own breed & owned. Have gotten to the point that most are our own genetics.
