Try reading "In all its Fury...The great blizzard of 1888".collected and compiled by w. h. O'gara edited and arranged by ora a. clemont printed by  j and l lee books.January 1888. 1,000 people died. Excellent history. I had two great great granddads hunkered down in dugouts in sherman and cheyenne counties when she hit. These people didn't have tractors to deal with the snow.

Aj - That is interesting...  I think the long ago winters (before our time) would probably have been worse because of less means to deal with them.

In recent memory - 78 /79 .. that was a doozy...  lots of snow and then ice on top of that.  We had no electricity for weeks.  Wind chills were in the negatives for days on end.

This winter is stacking up to be in my file of One of the worst though.    Ice storm before Christmas, more snow than we've had in a long long time.
