I say ban him for good.  I think the language and bullying are completely uncalled for on this forum.  There are a lot of younger members and I don't care to have my kids exposed to that.    On the other hand, I ignore most of his posts because they are of no interest to me.

If anyone has the chance to see Broker, you need to do so.  The bull himself is the real deal.   Not many will be able to get around him.     As far as his calves go,  all I've seen this fall are pretty good.    I think he's been used on a variety of cows and it looks like he will work on most of them.    If semen weren't so high, I'd be AIing a lot of cows to him.  As it is, we are flushing several to him.    We have several coming this spring and I'd say they are the most anticipated ones.

When I was taught to AI, the 'in' thing was to thaw it in the cow..    I never noticed any conception rate difference between thermos thawing and cow thawing.  That said, I think that semen collected more recently needs to be thawed in the warm water because I believe there is a difference in extenders - but I've not researched it enough to be sure.

Firesweep, I think I would probably not use that electric thawer anymore unless just as a thermos.   We had an electric one but didnt use it unless we are AIing more than a 3 or 4 at once..   it is easier to get the right temp from the tap and put it in the thermos than to wait on the electric to warm the water.   JMO of course!!

We've had a few of those cows .. and have to say I'm not sad to see them go...

On the other hand..  what about those 12+ year old cows that catch on AI the first time and have a decent to good (never great) calf every year and raise it good.. and then that last calf they loose due to some reason that is not their fault.   Or they come in thin off pasture that last season..  usually around here they've earned a little extra feed to get them thru the winter and to help raise that calf they will have in the spring.   They are usually the ones that never cause you much trouble, they are the ones that lead the pack when you are bringing them in or changing pastures..     Its a sad day to see those old girls go...

My experience with sexed semen flush is like Doc & others have said.. not good.     That said, I'd be interested in hearing what anyone has to say about doing invitrio using sexed semen.

The Big Show / Re: calfhood vaccinates

We do it religiously too.   Every heifer we keep as a replacement is vaccinated.     I would probably err on the side of vaccinating even in a Bruc. Free state because of the  health requirements in different states when we travel from show to show.    Less hassle in the long run when you are getting the health certificates done.

What about the dates?

Regarding Simmis in Lincoln -  That place is not really set up for cattle.  Where do they put tieouts and is there going to be enough electricity?

I'm curious how it will turn out too!   I know if it were a hot iron brand, it would burn in so it would be a big square with no distinction.  I have no idea if freeze branding will do the same.

I know there is another thread about placement but when we first started branding all of our brands were on teh left side because that's the side of the chute we work from.    However due to some unforeseen circumstances, we are now registered for our brand in all 6 places in with both freeze and hot specified..   We typically put it on the left shoulder BUT could do it where ever we wanted by whatever method we choose.

Gargan,  your calf should be registered as a 50%.

KSU is a great school.  Their Animal Science Department is one of the very best.   The vet school.... I think there are better ones out there and as far as I'm concerned they are still in a downward spiral until something happens in administration. Many/most of the good veterinarians have left.  There are only two there that I would use at this point.   I'm sure you've heard this before but make sure she declares another major.. AS&I or something as she cannot get a degree in Pre Vet.     We reminded of this when we went to one of their Junior Days last spring.

When trying pencil out what it costs to keep the bulls over winter to use again the next year, you have to add all the damages...   they are horrible on bale feeders, feed bunks, gates, fence.   Did you know that two mature bulls fighting can take out a 1/4 mile of barbed wire fence?
