If you were allowed to use only one bull on your cows, which one would it be and why? It can be an old bull or one that has just come on the market. If you have a picture that would be awesome! I find this forum is one of the fastest ways to learn about pedigrees and what stock has stood the test of time. It would be cool if you could add if you are commercial, purebred, or a show cattle guy....

Good question and a tough one at that. I have to say the bull walking my pasture right now gets my vote. I raise papered cattle but they are run commercial. No supplements at all. I am starting over and I just basically answered this to myself a couple years ago.  If you want I will be happy to tell you in a PM what bull is here. I dont want to be accussed of taking a oppurtunity and promoting my bull.

Good question. I am interested to hear what others would say

I shamelessly request a lot of self promotion. If you believe in what your doing, I say let's hear it!!!  <rock> I would love to hear and see what's being used!!!! But if you want you can pm me  ;D

Thats tough. We raise purebred show calves. I would probably have to go with Sonny. But one bull always catches my eye that I would love to have all of my cows bred to, SULL Outback 8116. I love the color on him and from his picture (I have never seen this bull or a video of him) he looks like a beast, and I am also a HUGE fan of his dam, Mona Lisa 35L. Ok I have talked myself into it, i'd pick Outback as the bull to breed all my cows.

Now, are you the person that can make something like that happen?

This is the bull here. Not a professional pic. Just me. He is from a master breeder IMO. Rob Sneed is his name. You want to moderate frame and get some easy keeping traits, this bull will help do it. Rob always has something for sale I believe. He lives in Missouri. This particular bull is IMO a sure fire heifer bull if I ever seen one for a shorthorn. 69 lb bw. His mama is a hog. I was just lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time to get involved. I am taking that oppurtunity and running with it. He is available in Cattlevisions. RS DV 034 329 08 is his name.  With that said, he is my favorite shorthorn bull for me to date. He is not the ebd all be all answer but he is a good tool to start.

I would probably go old school. When I was a kid he was all the rage TPS Coronet Leader 21st. I like the type of cattle he produces. not too big and not to small. The momma's I have seen have nice udder and milk pretty good. The cattle he produces seem to  be easy fleshing soft made. He never seems to breed extremes. We produce a few club calves local only but have developed a local meat market. Our Shorthorns actaully get more request than our XX bred cattle or black one's. I have more repeat customers that ask for ......" What ever the last one was". The way our calves have dressed out the shorthorns seem to always out perform FOR US.

Now going forward, I am sampling a wide variety of shorthorn bulls this year. My clean up bull goes back to Leader 21st and is line bred. I did sample 329, Touchdown, First Blood, Wymore, Gus, Sonny Dbl Vision son  bred them to  Asset, Jazz, Sonny, Heat Seeker, Leader 21st , Prima Donna x Byland females, let you know how that works about Feb- March. Just an experiment.

Mandalong Super Flag - at least that's bull I'm going with today. He was born in Australia,Oct. 1971 and imported to Canada at 10 months of age. Used heavily and has a lot of descendants producing. We have calves born this year that are impressive. Not many bulls can span that amount of time.

There are so many sires to consider, but I am going to have to say that Saskvalley Pioneer 126P does most everything I want in producing cattle for today. Pioneer was so structurally sound made, with big well formed feet and large well formed testicles that hung straight. He had 46 cm testicles at 23 months of age. He was moderate framed, thick and  extremely well muscled. He was extremely easy fleshing and his calves are the same. He was so good in some areas where many Shorthorns need some improvement.

My favorite over all time is Highfield Irish Mist, imported from Ireland in 1974. He probably did as much to improve Canadian Shorthorns as any other bull. Super Flag would be in this catagory as well. There are lots and lots of other bulls who did a good job of adding improvement to their offspringf, but these are the ones that have stuck out in my mind.

Pioneer is a very good choice! (minimum 8 crosses of Mandalong Super Flag).
Jaimie got her Hawkeye/ Candy heifer calf on the weekend. A Pioneer grand daughter looking good! (thumbsup)

This question is very similar to "Who is the greatest baseball player or who is the best race horse of all time?"  The answers could range from Babe Ruth to Mickey Mantle to Albert Pujols or from Man O' War to Citation to Secretariat.  It all depends on your point of reference.  The answer to my favorite Shorthorn bull of all time has changed over the years.  When we were first getting started, and I was probably a little impressionable, my quick answer would have been Bapton Constructor.  I was so enthralled with him that I picked a heifer to show in my first year as a 4-Her mainly because she was a granddaughter.  Ted Aegerter used to buy Shorthorn feeder cattle for us in South Dakota and picked up a few heifers from Thiedes for us.  I picked out Clara 141st from that group and got 3rd in a class of over 10 at our county fair.  Clara never had a calf.  My next 'hero' would have been Leader 21st x.  A white heifer we raised, Oakview Augusta's Secret x, was my first grand champion at the Iowa State Fair (in the junior show, she was second to the reserve champion in the open show).  The Leader 21s did well for us.  The next superbulls were probably Columbus and Dividend.  I was poor at the time and couldn't seem to afford offspring of either, but I did admire them.  Trump would be next in line and I would consider him my favorite of all and not just because he's the latest in the order.  Constructors were good at the time, but quickly fell out of favor.  Leader 21 was popular, then went about 20 years with no use and now has found a small resurgence.  Columbus was good for a few years, but hasn't been used much for 25 years at least.  Dividend cut a wide swath, but wouldn't be anywhere near as popular today as he was.  Considering Trump would be nearly 20 years old and has consistently maintained a huge influence over this time, he would be number one in my opinion.  I am extremely happy with my Big Jake bull, a son of Trump, and am looking forward to the day that I have 40 producing daughters of him.

CF Solution would be mine. He is simply the best. He is a big part in Sullivan Farms genetics and has been a real game changer lately. This guy is a legend.

If you look into Pioneer's heritage, there are 8 crosses of Irish Mist, and 8 crosses of Super Flag along with 6 crosses of Huberdale Mastercharge.... and a bunch of easy doing good uddered cows back by great producing cow lines.

So would he be considered a linebred bull? This is getting pretty cool reading folks. Keep it coming. I like Pioneer. To bad he died. Did I just admit to liking a roan bull? Whoops, SHHHH dont tell the mafia.
