What type (breed) of heifers do you have?

First off, do not use Dr.Who. I use him on cows and get 90-110 pound SQUARE calves. Which leads me to point #2.
It is not the weight of the calf but more importantly the SHAPE. Just remember: Round hole, square peg rarely works. Which leads me to point #3.
Why not angus? Your whole purpose of having heifers is to developing them into cows. They can not do that if they die having their first calf. Or if you have to do a c-section or a hard pull and ruin their reproductive tract. The goal of a producer with heifers is to have them have a LIVE calf, on their own, and milk well enough to raise it, AND get bred back.
If you are concerned with angus not being showy enough, try using Juneau, or TC Freedom, or MaxiHB40. Legend has been used heavily in clubbie herds with good luck. I didn't have luck with him, but a lot of others love him.

If you just refuse to use angus (and that is just silly) and you want your heifers to become cows, look hard at Jakes Proud Jazz.

thank you for ur comments and yes that does make sense, jpj is the bull i am currently considering...the primary heifer that im trying to match up is a brangus heifer i have. the only reason i dont want to use angus on her is because she is already 5/8. i am considering just goin back on her with another brangus bull and hope for a heifer but ideally i would like to find a club calf sire...any other thoughts?

Show Heifer is right.  Although you could find some bulls that would probably work "most of the time", I'm skeptical if you could find a good clubby that would work "all the time".  If there is such a thing it will probably be JPJ or Gizmo.  But, Shorthorns & Maines are bigger BW breeds as a whole & you hear about bulls like Ali working so well on heifer, then you here about that 120+ lb. calf, so I'm remaining skeptical.   If you don't want to use an Angus, Red Angus or Lowline Angus, I think that I'd breed her back to Brangus if it were me.  If you abosultely want to try something different, I think that I'd buy some JPJ.

The livestock (show) industry is a tough one- if you've never had anything worth a damn you might as well go on the internet and rundown everybody you can.

I agree with TJ and S/H. If it was me I would use Carney Man(M), Grizz(A), WMW(Comp), Northern Improvement(A), Shiver(Comp), Priceless(Comp), Gigolo Joe(M), Old School(A), Witch Doc(M), Osage(A), & Star Power(Simmy). That's my opinion. A live calf makes you money a Dead One doesn't.

We have used In Focus, 1I2, 6I6, and Morgan's Direction on our heifers. We have had some awesome heifers out of Morgan's Direction, but have had good calves out of all of them, and absolutely no trouble calving. Never used a Maine bull on a heifer, and never will. Ours will always be bred Angus first time, and sometimes even second time around. Then they can start getting bred to some Clubby bulls when they are ready.

I will back this up 100%.  We AI'd to In Focus last year and got some outstanding heifers, as well as bull calves out of him.  If you do use him, my only suggestion is make sure the females aren't too leathery in their brisket/ dewlap, as he will only add to it.  We have also used Morgans Direction, with nothing but good calves out of him as well.  I was in denver this past week with a group of angus producers who had a 1I2 daughter that was down right GOOD.  Also seen some really solid, showy type of calves out of 6I6 up there as well.  If you want to use consistant lbw, theres always 'ole 878 to resort back to as well.
Impossible as they may seem, you've got to fight for every dream, because who's to know which one you let go would have made you complete

any concerns with jpj?

My only concern is if he's extremely consistent siring "calving ease".   I'm sure he works on 4 out of 5 heifers, but does he work on 49 out of 50?   I HATE pulling calves, so that's the question that I'd be asking & I can't answer it for you.

BTW, I know it wont matter, but here is a 1/2 blood Lowline... 42 lb. actual birth weight, she's a frame 4 something & as wide as you'd ever want one.
