My daughter is showing a Shorthorn steer which she has worked extremely hard with.  She rinses at least twice a day and walks every day but he appears to be very lazy when she walks him.  I am not sure if this is the right term to use as he does not fight the rope but he just doesnt seem to have the energy like some animals do.  My husband and I like to say that he looks like a "dopey".  He is a late Feb 2013 so he is one of the older steers but he actually covers his tracks pretty well just doesnt seem perky like some other calves.  Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do?

Try one of the pronged leads for the show halter from Sullivan's.  They work wonders on a pokey or stubborn calf.  Use it sparingly.  As soon as they give and start moving put some slack in it.

I think sullivans had a paste that was used like an energy drink. They told us about it at Stock Show University, it is the Caffeine equivalent of a 175 pound man drinking one diet coke or maybe it was diet pepsi. I think it comes with a dosage guide

Has he always been like that? It could just be his personality. Every so often we get cattle that are a little more "dopey" than the rest. If they are little I am more concerned with illness, but since this is a grown steer I am leaning more towards this just being his personality, but it is hard to tell without seeing him. Sometimes cattle get too tame or too used to being worked with that they don't want to move or mope around. I would not worry too much about it, as long as he walks decent enough or with someone behind him he should be fine in the show ring.
