Lucky Dice (Simmy) SPOTS !!!
« on: July 31, 2011, 10:33:39 PM »
GW Lucky Dice as we all know carries the spotter gene , i really had it come out in a calf last year. Here he is pictured and also a small shot of his dam which has no spotters in her pedigree and is a purebred simmy . Kinda crazy color huh !!!

huh, never knew about this. What does this do to the value of the calf? Does the association discriminate against the spotted ones with registering and what not?
America Hell yea! Coming to save the mother loving day!
I make people angry that's my fault. I'm a line stepper, im a habitual line stepper.

Old World Shorty - Alot of simmy breeders would probably hide this calf  but actually i was paid well for him as a steer. Yes i would guess this type of coloring is more than likely looked down upon by the association lol ! He was a pretty decent steer ill have to admit . You could probably breed a thousand cows the same exact way and never see this type of color again !!!

I have seen the Dice color a few times, but most of them have come from breeding Dice to a Baldy.  The progeny I have seen has 30% white on them and were marked similar to a Hereford w/o the white strip on the neck.  In purebred, white socks aren't very popular characteristics.  If marketing them as show steers or heifers, its not as big a deal.

I don't know the slightest bit about your herd, but I remember where you posted a traditional colored, red and white spotted heifer in the for sale section...

Now you post this calf, and say that you could breed 1000 cows this way and not see that color again.....  but there I've only seen 2 calves from you, and both were the exact same color pattern (one black/ one red).

Anyways, I'm not trying to start anything, but I'm going to guess you've got some old colored up, red and white, simi's in your background pretty close. ;)

The first Lucky Dice that we had (and one of the only 2 ever)....hard pull and didn't see any BLACK until the calf was out to just past the front shoulders...thought that the heifer was bred Charolais!

The white color does intrigue many people.  We had a Macho out of a Duff bred donor last year that had white up to nearly his knees on all 4 legs, a full white belly, and a white face with goggle eyes.  He was in the chute with the knife ready last spring and couldn't make myself cut him; he was just two good of a calf.  Decided to take a chance and put him on the sale.  When the catalogs came out, the first 3 phone calls were on him.  Ending up having over 20 phone calls on him from across the country.  He also ended up being the 3rd high selling bull on our sale...matter of fact, all 3 of our top sellers had some white on their back feet.  Something that I try to stay away from, but it doesn't bother others at all, in fact it intrigues some.

These spots are a little extreme, but the good ones will sell well, even with white legs and bellies.

Hey the truth , good guess but your wrong , the red n white calf is at the closest a fifth generation gene coming through and this black n white is all due to Lucky Dice and him carrying the spotter gene . Just my luck I guess !

I actually had to pull the black n white spotted calf and as I was pulling more and more of him out I couldn't believe what I was seeing ! I've heard Dice can paint them up but this guy was a little over painted ! Don't want to knock the bull but I guess it does happen.

I haven't used him a ton but I had quite a few daughters and grandaughters out of him over the last few years , most of which were solid black or just white on the belly.

i thought LD was a carrier of dilutor, not spotter.. I've never heard of the spotter gene in Sim..

We have a grand daughter of LD, never got anything but diluter solid colored calves.  bred her Ai to a Char, pasture to the shorthorn this year, we'll see what happens..

Truth - look up Lucky Dice on the Genex web site , says right on his information , SPOTTER ! Dilution is mainly the grey coloring in simmentals .

gotcha, I'll be the first to admit I know very little about Sim cattle.. Our LD simangus grand daughter is the only cow on the place that has any SM in her.  she was a steal though..

I come on here to learn about sim, they seem to be the go to thing right now...

I do know that Rendition is the real deal though, that's about the extent of my sim knowledge.
