I have been feeding Purina . But with 7 head on it at 16.95/50lb, I decided to try AAOKs' recipe. Just started them on it this weekend. Anxious to see how it goes. Went from $678/ton to $381/ton. You can find his formula on here.

Doc,
Please let me know how your cattle like the recipe. I am currently working with a feed mill to see if they can mix it up for me.  I'm very anxious to try it out.

AAOK's recipe is really good. I also got tired of paying for Purina Show Chow. Have been feeding Dan's ration for over a year. Along with a GOOD mineral, it's hard to beat. I didn't notice one difference in performance. I was feeding a yearling heifer that was fed Show Chow the season before and that heifers weanling full sister.
Dan is a great guy and surely would talk to anyone in more detail about the ration.

We are using Dan's (AAOK) recipe for the second year now, and LOVE LOVE LOVE IT! Last year we had multiple big wins with it. Like BRDoc said, use a good mineral in it, and we also top dress with Vitaferm Sure Champ, but it's a BUNCH cheaper than any other show feeds out there. We are paying about $13.90/hundred here. Also, we have to use the cottonseed hull pellets instead of loose cotton seed because it clogs up the mill. But that is the only change. We modify an individual ration if we need more or less fat for weight gain using Rumafill, which is another great product to build bellies, and cheaper than Depth Charge or beet pulp.
AAOK's recipe is great because you can do so much with it, or not. Which ever works for your animal at the time...

we use AAOK's recipe for the heifers and as a grower for the steers, it's also what goes in our creep feeder for the calves. we have free choice mineral in the pastures, and we also top dress it with the feed. the steer is on pre bagged purina show chow as a finisher. i would be feeding rowed .49 if we could get it in wisconsin. but its all in indianna and illinois that i kno of, we can't get it here yet. my steer was on the rowe wen i bought him. aaok's recipe works well the animals love it even with out all the molasses. it's definitely cheaper and it works.

IN some ways it depends on where you are. If you have easy access to a feed mill I too have used a modified version of AAOK's recipe and I like it. It is cost effective and get results. I have fed bagged feeds in the past and have not seen any difference. We usually feed a dozen or so at one time. Some bagged feeds are not readily available to everyone and travel and delivery should be a factor in the cost. If you ahve the opportunity to work with a feed mill I would highly suggest it. If they have a beef specialist even better.

We used  Purina Show Chow Grand 4-T-Fyer it worked wonders on both of my steers and even the heifer and it was very easy to change for the difference in animal types. We just checked Purinas online site and it gave us great rations that we could keep or change.

We feed Umbarger. Have yet to find anything better here in SE Michigan (my opinion...for what its worth). We have had a lot if success in the show ring with our calves that have been on it.

We used to have a ration made very similar to Dan's, but this year, thanks to some coaxing from Josh Ramsey, we switched to Essential. Too early to tell, but from what I've seen so far, it's been very impressive. The biggest difference I've noticed thus far, is the fact that in very hot conditions (got up to 104 yesterday), our steers will walk away from the shaded barn with fans on, to go out in the hot sun to go eat. May be the cattle, but I really feel that it's the feed. In years past, that's never happened. Also, the corn that was used in the ration we had made, was Oklahoma-grown, low test weight (48-55 pound test weight) I can't help but think that Nebraska corn would be much higher quality.  I'm using the Essential 12% grower right now, (this is for fall-borns)with a pound of Essential Beef Designer mineral, and 2 pounds of Sure Champ per day.

Time will tell how well this works, but so far, I'm very impressed!
