Fatten quicker in pen or paddock?

I have a heavyweight steer that needs fattening over the last 45 days before our big show. Should I lock him up in a pen and his grain ration or keep him in the paddock (which has very little grass) with the self feeder? Which would fatten him more quickly? Thanks.

    Preventing injuries while breaking in

My steer got his leg caught between two yard panels today and got a nasty cut to his leg which will see him out of competition now. It is a terrible shame as he is a cracking steer. It was his first time being tied up and he is very quiet, then out of nowhere he reared right up and came down...

Keeping condition on cattle during shows

Has anyone got any tips for reducing stress and keeping condition on cattle at shows? Whenever we go away for a hoof and hook, the cattle go off their feed in varying amounts, sometimes will not drink as much as they would normally and look hollowed out a bit in the flanks come show day. Is...

    Getting that fluffy coat

Speckle Park steer like you've never seen!

OH Breeder, I have only ever tied up to a donkey. We have two other steers that lead well, do you mean tie them up to one of them for a few hours? He stands tied and we brush him and wash him and he gets a lot of love from the students. It is just leading him that he disagrees with. We have been...

Speckle Park steer like you've never seen!

I have a cracker of a steer that we are currently breaking in. He is a Speckle ParkXLimo X Murray Grey (We are in Australia). I have high hopes for him if we can get the fat cover on that rump in time. Would welcome any thoughts/opinions on him. In the photos he is 9 months old. We are having a...

    Showing pregnant heifers

My school has just won a heifer who was AI six weeks ago. As we are new to showing purebred heifers (we usually only do the steer carcass comps) I am after some advice. How long is it safe to show her for before putting her out to paddock? What sort of protein % grain should we be feeding her...
