Fatten quicker in pen or paddock?

I have a heavyweight steer that needs fattening over the last 45 days before our big show. Should I lock him up in a pen and his grain ration or keep him in the paddock (which has very little grass) with the self feeder? Which would fatten him more quickly? Thanks.

I wouldn't change where he is at 45 days from the show for the sole purpose of trying to get him fatter. If you want him to move around less then just put his feed and water close to each other and where he likes to rest. Also try adding stabilized rice bran, work him up to 2lbs/day to add fat cover.
