Suggestions to help 4H steer eat better

At his age and weight, some kind of grower ration with more fiber and bulk would be better I think. Also, did you mix a 3500 lb batch of this feed? If so, it can get stale only feeding 12 lb per day. I'd get something like glu-coat to top dress it with.

    Feeding advice needed

Since no one has mentioned it how is his water? Has the tank been cleaned lately?

    Melatonin\weight gain

I have used melatonin in pill form at the rate of 10mg/cwt for disposition. It worked. Just topdressed the feed with it. 3-5mg tablets are better than 10mg in case he sorts the feed and leaves a couple in the trough. My 2 cents. Your mileage may vary.

Secrets to feeding a show steer

Not light weight or inexpensive but we got a couple of these last year. Will buy a couple more. https://www.sbcustominnovation.com/hang-on-steel-feeder/

My Herford Steer will not budge! Please Help!

The cable halters work about as well to make a stubborn calf walk as they do to make a breaking calf stop.

    Weight gain

Should be no problem hitting that weight. 2-2.5% of body weight of any 14% premixed grower feed available to you. Lots of ways to get where you want to be. Just feed him and keep the water tank clean.

Garlic in mineral for fly control?

I have fed and will feed again this summer the VF minerals with HEAT. Outstanding products and the benefits of HEAT and Amafirm are visible in the cattle. As for the garlic I really couldn't tell any difference one way or the other from a fly control standpoint.

    hot shots

Have several jolts just because that's what the local co-op sells. One is rechargeable. They work well but shafts are junk. Hard to beat the original hot shot brand for durability.

Slick Sheered heifer and steer, hair growth tips for September show?

This won't help you grow any hair, but FWIW warts are much easier to prevent than they are to treat. We fought warts for a few years before we started giving a wart vaccine and booster. Haven't had any issues since.

    Clipping Slick, and Shedding Questions

Use a grill brick to remove the old hair. Too close to show time to slick shear now. Think about body clipping late next fall for next spring's project.

    bull info needed general lee!

Seems to work pretty well on our meyer influenced cows. We've had several ring eyes and stocking feet. Probably not as hairy as we might like overall. We are feeding 2 now and sold one to a neighbor. 2 easy feeders, one a little harder doing. All seem to have great dispositions.

    No Worries calves

3 born to heifers this week. 2 were out of 50-60# simangus heifers. 1 was closer to 90 out of a choppin wood heifer. 1 baldy and 2 brockle face.

    Peace pelletS

My experience is both work but the meletonin keeps them more evenly tempered. Peace pellets work pretty fast but wear off pretty fast as well. After a couple of days on meletonin they will "mellow out" and be calm around the clock. We used 10mg per day for a 11-1200# steer

That cruise control halter looks like exactly the tool for the job.

    More advice please....

A second lead held by a stronger person walking on the show side has worked for us in an effort to prevent the head lowering and butting. The chain lead with prongs makes it easier for smaller kids to keep the head up.

    Maximus vs. Climax

Happy with all our Maximus offspring on Angus based cows. Never used Climax, but seems like some said he had disposition issues back when I was doing research on Meyer sons 6-7 years ago.

I need some advice for our steer

Something about little kids, regardless of how gentle the calf is they will try to get their bluff in one way or another. A larger person can lead the calf with no issues. A small child-maybe a little nervous, maybe just their size- and he will try them. A second lead on the opposite side of the...

    Ideas on 1st calf heifer?

For an Angus option we have used JSAR Titan on a few SimX heifers and really like the results. I think Kris Black had a Titan daughter or 2 in this years COC and many of the heifers sold bred to Titan.

    County fair health papers?

Same here. Just happened to stop by vets office on the way to our county show and they offered inspect the steers and issue a health certificate. State vet showed up there as well.

    Hot Simmental bulls

We have had 4 GCC Whizzard (only 50% sim I think) calves born to black cows this year and all have bald, blaze, or star markings. Best results of any white/blaze faced sim bull we have used.
