I watch the holding time on the tank more than the age.  When you have to start refilling it twice as often then it is time to replace the tank.  If a tank just sits in the barn it will last a lot longer than one that bounces around in the back of a pickup.

R there any early signs that a tank is going to fail?  I have heard they will get frost around the neck a day or so before failing completely.  At least you could try to move the semen to another tank....
