You are right Mark. I went and didn't get the red calf. Weird deal he was picked by the commercial customer as the $10000 winner, then the commercial guy actually flipped him in the sale and he sold for $10000. I know the owners were not to happy that was allowed to happen. He is headed to the States soon - he was bought by some pretty big breeders and a club calf guy. They are going to get me some in herd use semen before he goes so I'm happy. The french bull calf you liked was a good calf. Thick and powerful but really dropped off in his rear quarter. Still a good calf though - lots of performance.

Went to the dispersal as well - the Specialist calves were by far the best calves. He sold for around $12000 for the 1/4 interest. The Hank influence is still a great thing - he was a heck of a bull

I really have no idea what the plans are for the calf. All I know is they plan to get him into the States asap.

Hell sure work in the US-there arent enough thick RED or WHITE or ROAN bulls with size and honest bws-charolaisx shorthorn along with shorthorn-simmi-clubby are 2 very good crosses right now-and in thier infancy-not to mention some very cool red cattle, that are chi-main-this and that.-just look at Laughtner, and some of the others, and 6.5 is what is needed to make them grow-and not lose the butt-just have to see how the bws are-if he was under 100 in Canada-he woulda been in the 80s here-and cooll looking as can be.My guess is that he is one of the steps in producing BLACK CHAROLAIS-which to me-is just flat out STOOOOOPID!Ill take the red anytime. Mark - I think he will work well. Im curious about the Shorthorn deal - what color do you think he would throw out of a roan cow? I have a few around home I bought from a neighbour.  Im excited to try him on my Simmi-Angus cross cows. The semen is on its way to Canada soon. I can hopefully get 20 straws to try from the guys who bred him to try.

As for the black Chars - I have seen a few up in Canada already. Nothing great so far. I dont see a need for the breed to go in that direction. I think a breeder from southern AB already has sold some black ones to the States. The gene pool is so small that the quality is not there yet. The reds up here were like that too when they started - but they have gotten better and better every year.

He looks like a solid made calf, we bred a few red factors and have a couple real good ones this year. He could work, it all depends on what part of the world you are breeding in. In Canada we like our calves a notch bigger, some of the best steers up here are 1325+. Chars naturally have more growth and that is what they were brought over from France for. If his bloodlines have some moderation in them then I think he is cool. If you cows have enough power I might say sticking to breeding him to smaller framed vows that need more jam.
I am waiting to halter and picture a solid red bull calf that was born in Jan, we already have some intrest in him.
Take care and good luck!
