Calf eating show halter

My son's market heifer is continually licking and trying to eat his leather show halter while he practices (his first year showing).  This is way more than the normal lick here and there.  Tonight it was for about 20 minutes straight. Is this just because or is she needing salt?  She has a salt block available at all times.
