We had a PB shorthorn bred to what I thought was Choppin Wood. You can imagine my surprise when she calved a blue roan heifer. I thought right away that we pulled a wrong straw, however, I am wondering, with the way the smoke gene works, could it have come from Choppin Wood? I may be wrong, but he should carry the black gene, just masked by the smoke gene, correct? Would he pass just the black gene on? If we pulled a wrong straw, it would be a General Lee, however, this calf does not have the thickness of our other General Lee, nor was the other General Lee calf roan, even though it was out of a roan cow. Some genetic help would be greatly appreciated.
