Finishing Steers

We are 100 days from fair. When is the appropriate time to stop the growth and finish the steer? The steers are right at 950 to 1000 lbs. They are April calves, started on feed late, gaining about 120lbs per month (i know that seems crazy, but truth, 18% grain).

What kind of ration do you put your steers on the last 90 days? I have read about using barley for a smoother finish? What kind of ration would you use when you incorporate that? What about the use of rice bran?

Trying to find threads on this specific thing, is like finding needles in a hay stack. There isn't a specific thread for it. Hopefully I will get some answers for the kids.

i put them on Purina show chow finishing touch or fitters edge

I add stabilized rice bran.  Great smooth finish.

I think we usually do 1/2 pound of barley and 1 lb of rice bran per feeding.
