Finishing Strategy

What is everyone's strategy for finishing their steer and why?  Some people want to push them hard and hold them for months once they are close to finished while others prefer to have them finish just in time for the show.  I appreciate most of you here compete at many show over multiple months so the strategy would be a little different than shooting for one particular show, but I would love to hear your opinions and the reasons behind them!!
