holding a steer

We have a steer that we will show in 13 days- he weighs 1440.  What is the best way to hold a steer and keep him looking fresh.  He is eating 15lbs/day along with hay.  In our county show you don't do well if you weigh in over 1400.

Is he on free choice hay or do you just give him so much a day ?

he gets 1 block of coastal daily.

I held one for 5 weeks by cutting his feed in half and letting him have pretty much all the hay he wanted.

Cut his feed in half or even less and add equal amounts of beet pulp, keeps them fresh and full! And like Shortdawg said, lots of hay!!
