just finished calving

My Maximus cow just had a calf.  nice calf but the cow didnt want to have the calf in the pasture so she got out and had it in the rye field. I spent the after noon trying to catch the calf and get them back with everyone else.  She sure is a good mom though lots of milk and make me wonder why i mess with these shorthorns.

That is just their natural instinct to separate from the rest of the herd when they get ready to calve.  If you have ever had those older calves riding those day calves, you will understand why they do it.  Just another sign of strong maternal instinct to protect their baby.  Good luck with the calf.
