I recently bought a Jersey for a nurse cow and I wont have calves for her until the fall. However she had a calf on her that I sold now her bag swells up and got really hard and when you milk her it comes out like butter. We milk her every couple of days to loosen her up and there was never really any blood in her milk when we milked her. My question is if I turned her out on a pasture would she dry up or would her bag get infected from not milking her.  Is there a shot that I can give her to dry her up IDK maybe something to inhibit the oxytocin release?

Any help is appreciated

If she's not bred to calve this fall you need to keep her in milk or she will be no use to you as a nurse cow.

She's not bred for fall. I am wanting to dry her up so I can breed her for fall of next year. I just wont be able to utilize her this year but I do need to get her in sync with the rest of the herd
