Port-A-Cool

Question to those of you using a Port-A-Cool.    Do you use the mineral treatment for the water tank, do you pretreat the water before it reaches the unit (water softener, etc.), or do you have good enough water to do none of the above?  Our water is on the hard side and I am trying to see if folks have found a cost effective solution to that problem (other than “build/buy a cooler and forget everything else”)

We haven't been treating the water and haven't see any problems with a portacool.  We don't have super hard water but I do know some people in our area use a softner.
