Have seen quite a few Smooth Sailing calves, about 20 in all,I would guess. These calves were from 1/2 Maine Angus and 1/2 Simms and 5 charolais composites. Not a throw away anywhere. Maybe the next Heatwave? with a much better calving prognosis. I was told the largest calf was 90lbs. all unassisted from mature cows.....JOHN
I seen him one day when Greg Kroupa had him, and he looks like the real deal. Plus Greg says the calves are real good, and if Greg gives his approval they must be something special!
It seems that he needs to be bred to cows similar to how you would breed flush. I would use him on a moderate cow, I don't think he will take away middle, but I don't think he is adding much either. The calves seem to be stout hairy and awfully stylish. It seems that he will even help structure. We are pretty excited about the ones we have on the ground and we have more to come.
Been sick,so haven't responded to your further questions about Smooth Sailing. The cows I seen calves out of were typical Greg Kroupa club calf cows. 51-52 inches tall, really deep sided, adequate to large boned, hairy, and sound. All colors.
