Thoughts on cf primo

I am going to flush one of my oldest cows this year. She is basically my matriarch cow. I wanted to flush to cf solution but I can't afford his semen. Cf primo is one of solutions full brothers that I can actually buy semen on. Just wondered what people thought of him? Is he worth buying semen on him to flush with? The cow is a solid red outcross that is pretty moderate in her height, big hipped, deep bodied with a good shoulder on her. If people have other suggestions to flush her with I would appreciate your suggestions.

I;m with Dale-the times are changing-and the older cows are precious in one respecy-they are A LOT closer to reality RE thier BWS and EPDS-Primo-Solution etc are headed out the door with the teeming masses for good reason.And its up to you-but there are certainely more honest bloodlines to spend your money on-everyone can pooh pooh me as much as they want.I also dont need to hear about the 70 pound calf somebody had out of one of them-I can post TWO pictures of twp years  of just BORN Assasins-who is in no way an easy calver-and not promoted that way -1: was 72-the other full sib this year 66-they are pictured still wet, or just cleaned-NO BS NO smoke-But thats not the point-Thanks. O0 O0

What are your goals or expectations with this mating?  I think he is a trait leader for growth and milk?  However, I agree with mark his birth weights will be eratic with most likely large calves.  Depending on your goals their could be more useful and reliable genetics out there.

I'll reserve comments on any epds of the bulls mentioned thus far. Again-it would help to know the cows breeding. You can drop down to the 65% show hiefers thread PAGE 6 and there are some Red Reward sons and some offspring-As far as whats happening this is a new direction and JMO-a much better one.Bulls like Hotcommodity and depending upon how shes bred and made JIT'S Blue Book and the Big Roan in his avatar are 2 more -and maybe the better Canadian deals for showy types-that are REAL in the field O0

I will only relate my personal experiences with Primo.  I purchased a share when he was offered as a calf.  I had absolutely no calving issues, even out of cows with a shot of Maine in them (the fullblood style).  I used him on heifers frequently and never helped one.  Wayne Temple had him on his farm and used him more than most and will tell you the same thing.  My favorite Primo calves were the ones that were out of cows with Maine in them.  I used him on Double Trouble, Double Vision, and Double Down daughters and really liked the results.  I would have used that more often if it weren't for the defects, which I will not mess with.  I have what many call the best bull calf I've raised in over 50 years that is a grandson of a Primo X Double Trouble cow and sired by my Canadian bull, Zulu.  When Mike Studer tells me it's the best calf I've raised, I know he must be pretty good.  My Primo daughters had good udders, bred back as desired, and raised excellent calves.  I have not used Solution or Bloodstone or any of the other full brothers, so I cannot comment on any comparisons between them.  If your cow has some substance and you're looking for show type animals, I wouldn't be afraid of using him.

It just depends on if you want to raise show cattle? If yes, then he would be a good bang for your buck as these are the bloodlines that win shows.
If you want to brag about efficiency and epds and what not, then no he would not be a good choice for you.

The cow is out of a Equity x Crawfdown Lea bull out of the Rosemary cow family. Her ced is a 2, bw 3.8, ww 49 and yw is 53. Ideally I would like to flush her to a bull that would produce heifers that excel in the show ring and as a cow.

I see that you have used NBS Lowrider-whos a pretty good bull: and would mix well with Charmer and Canadian-Which also somes down to Enticer x Rodeo-proven over and over for 27 years and counting.. Have you seen Steve Frenches young bull out of Red Reward and the SonnyxCanadian cow? REG-4218236-Hes in the latest Short Country which is now back on line. He has a -1 bw epd (remains to be seen) but looks and by pedigree Fits that cows breeding. I dont have time to go into reasons but there are 4-5 matches in the first 2 generations of both sides that will work.The recorded calves so far out of Reward-and his sons seem to have the look-epds-and definitely will show-credit where its due-this is the most uesfull all around line that is becoming available by default to everyone in a long time-IT is not about bragging about NON show efficiency-not at least in the US that Ive seen.Its about documented honest cattle that can calve on thier own and raise a calf-after showing and hopefully being sucessfull in some measure to thier owners. Most purebred Shorthorns will have to meet both parameters to be marketable in the everyday world. The other breeds although not as perfect in every way as some would like you to believe have to do the same thing. O0
