I have a steer that hates the showstick. Kicks, jumps around--very naughty! Does anyone have some good ideas to help with this situation. Would like to have him behave himself at Aksarben. Thank you for your advice.
We work very hard with our kids and their cattle to get them to set up without a stick. Then we only use the stick on the front feet and to scratch their belly or brisket. with a little work you can train your calf to walk into place and never even really need the stick.
I also believe in using the stick very little but if he doesn't like being scratched I tie them up or do it in the chute til they get over it. I did have a heifer once that didn't like her belly scratched but her brisket and neck she was ok with.
