Her mother is the heifer on the left, a week before calving.

Those are some good looking calves Harley.  Have you guys had uncommon warm weather this spring also? Not seeing any snow in those pics. We have been really warm this March, been in the upper 70's already this month.

Thanks Brad.  Yes we have been warm.  Hardly any snow at all.  The cows are already chasing some shoots of grass around, more than a month earlier than normal.  We have broken many high temp records this winter.

Thanks for the comments.  She is an 8 yr old cow, and has been one of our top producers.

She was bred to our Galloway herd sire.

Bred black, she will always have a grey calf.  If she is bred to a red bull or red carrier, she will have a strawberry blonde.  Silver duns are homozygous for the grey / dun color.

If the bull throws some painted calves, hers should be also, buut they will not be black.

I know the market is all about black... but my favorites are still the duns. When we had to purge the herd due to drought last fall, we let two excellent dun females go as part of a package deal.  Still miss them.

It has been unseasonably warm throughout the entire midwest.  Very scary heading into this summer as I think we might have record heat.

Here are some pics of the heifer and her 2yr old mother.  The calf was clipped a month ago.

Very nice looking cattle.

How big are they?

How do they take the heat?  Do they shed?

Very nice looking Cow/ heifer pair, you will enjoy them.

Thanks

the 2 yr old weighs about 1100

Galloways handle heat much better than people think.  The hair acts as a radiator, wicking away moisture.  As long as they are hydrated, they can handle heat very well.  Some bloodlines do shed better than others.  most shed July-Aug and put hair back on Sept.

We like her.  She had great carcass  ultrasound results, and her mother and full brothers seem to gain on air.
