Looking for new shorthorn herd bull
« on: October 03, 2017, 10:38:00 PM »
Thinking about getting a shorthorn bull to clean up after ai.  Are there any sales where you can find non showy type bulls.  Looking for good functional type that will put the pounds on calves.

We are selling two of our herd bulls in our Herd Reduction sale on October 18th at Johnstone Auction Mart, Moose Jaw, SK. They are both outstanding bulls, and both have excellent dispositions. They are real beef bulls. Check them out in our sale catalog which is posted online at www.horseshoecreekfarms.com ( click on Sales tab) or at www.dvauction.com. The sale will be broadcast live on dvauction.
Because it isn't bull sale season, the terms we are offering on these bulls is 1/2 down sale day and the balance due March 1,2017

Depending on what all you're looking for, I might have something to offer.  I've got some really good herdsire prospects I'd welcome anyone to come look at. Sired by both Saskvalley Alamo and Leveldale Genesis. While I don't hold a sale, I'm also not looking to be compensated for all the primping and politicking associated with a purebred cattle sale either. I've found selling bull calves off the cow to be a much better model; it's certainly a more forethright one.

LOL O0

I might have something that would work for you.   I will wean in the first part of November.   I have used a son of Coalpit Creek Leader 6th as well as an ET son of Saskvalley Pioneer out of Six S Leah.   I have calves from both.  I am located in Southern Idaho.

Hey everyone.  First time I have had a chance to get online for while.  Thanks for all the responses. I didn't think about Canadian bulls.  Is it hard to get one across the border.  By the way I'm located in Virginia.

This is a Canadian bull we have for sale. Hill Haven Distinction, full brother to Hill Haven Bold. Long bodied, smooth shouldered and easy fleshing. Easy calving. Been used on virgin heifers with no problems. I think 2 horned calves out of over 100. This is registered and commercial calves. EPD's are pretty good. Halter broke and was shown. $2,500.00  Located 25 miles north of Nashville, TN. 615-202-7106

If Indiana isn't too far for you, Shady Maple Farm has a hell of a set of Shorthorn bulls they'd sell at a good price.

I'd be giving Distinction a serious look at that price KnD.

I'd also give Chad at Shady Maple, that Olson mentioned, a call. If he put the bulls he had coming up in his and Galbreath's January bull sale I'd watch it closely. Both are good to deal with.

I'm from Virginia-but know people all over-I think you need to address the kind of cows-BWS, and breeding. The best-closest small  Shorthorn herd in the 3 or 4 state area is Dick Childs-who is 10 miles from me in Summit Point West Va-there isnt anything within 300 miles on the level of his cattle-but they are not the easiest calving.-He spent alot of money on TOP OF THE BREED CATTLE-Not the ratty hardoing dual SH$$$$T that seemed to be in Va and in a small part Maryland..That was  untill people like Teets and a bunch of other Shennandoah valley breeders started breeding clubby-and Shorthorns had to exhibit some quality or bring nothing at the sale barn-because no one wanted them-and for the most part-rightfully so. There are also a few in MD and several good herds in PA-Bradley Eismingers sale has some really decent cattle-with Masonoc Village being a good place to look for an all around thick calf-JMO-After that-the nearest ones are in Ohio (Jay Benham is a friend and has great cattle) or Kentuckey-MARTINDELL.-And a very good bull listed by Doc above in Tenn.per example. So-what are 1: your budget, 2-Breeding type and age of bull 3: Calving EPD numbers-and or genetic defect requirements? O0
