Thinking about getting a shorthorn bull to clean up after ai.  Are there any sales where you can find non showy type bulls.  Looking for good functional type that will put the pounds on calves.

Lots of them in Canada. Lovings, Jungles, and Paint valley have sales in the us. Wise shorthorns have some very functional looking cattle as do y lazy y but neither of them have sales just private treaty I believe.

Where are you? Will on here is from Oklahoma-he knows where alot of good ones are-Hahn in Illinois,DTR in souhtern Kansas-Loving in Kansas, Brad Davis in Iowa has very good cattle, Martincdell in Kentuckeyhave mybe the most functional cattle for the price IN THE BREED,Haun in Illinois, Schomberg or Backenhus in Nebraska-lots of choices-just need to start with an area convenient to you-then the type of bull you are looking for O0

We are selling two of our herd bulls in our Herd Reduction sale on October 18th at Johnstone Auction Mart, Moose Jaw, SK. They are both outstanding bulls, and both have excellent dispositions. They are real beef bulls. Check them out in our sale catalog which is posted online at www.horseshoecreekfarms.com ( click on Sales tab) or at www.dvauction.com. The sale will be broadcast live on dvauction.
Because it isn't bull sale season, the terms we are offering on these bulls is 1/2 down sale day and the balance due March 1,2017

Depending on what all you're looking for, I might have something to offer.  I've got some really good herdsire prospects I'd welcome anyone to come look at. Sired by both Saskvalley Alamo and Leveldale Genesis. While I don't hold a sale, I'm also not looking to be compensated for all the primping and politicking associated with a purebred cattle sale either. I've found selling bull calves off the cow to be a much better model; it's certainly a more forethright one.

LOL O0

I might have something that would work for you.  I will wean in the first part of November.  I have used a son of Coalpit Creek Leader 6th as well as an ET son of Saskvalley Pioneer out of Six S Leah.  I have calves from both.  I am located in Southern Idaho.

March 1, 2017? typo?

"Typo?"-my what an important addition and clarification to this thread: now all we need is an intelligent or (any) response from the person who originally posted this thread (question). O0

Hey everyone.  First time I have had a chance to get online for while.  Thanks for all the responses. I didn't think about Canadian bulls.  Is it hard to get one across the border.  By the way I'm located in Virginia.

This is a Canadian bull we have for sale. Hill Haven Distinction, full brother to Hill Haven Bold. Long bodied, smooth shouldered and easy fleshing. Easy calving. Been used on virgin heifers with no problems. I think 2 horned calves out of over 100. This is registered and commercial calves. EPD's are pretty good. Halter broke and was shown. $2,500.00  Located 25 miles north of Nashville, TN. 615-202-7106

If Indiana isn't too far for you, Shady Maple Farm has a hell of a set of Shorthorn bulls they'd sell at a good price.

I'd be giving Distinction a serious look at that price KnD.

I'd also give Chad at Shady Maple, that Olson mentioned, a call. If he put the bulls he had coming up in his and Galbreath's January bull sale I'd watch it closely. Both are good to deal with.

I might have one check out RDE Renaldo on Bilmar shorthorns on Facebook. There are pics and a video, locate in Charles town Wv.

I'm from Virginia-but know people all over-I think you need to address the kind of cows-BWS, and breeding. The best-closest small  Shorthorn herd in the 3 or 4 state area is Dick Childs-who is 10 miles from me in Summit Point West Va-there isnt anything within 300 miles on the level of his cattle-but they are not the easiest calving.-He spent alot of money on TOP OF THE BREED CATTLE-Not the ratty hardoing dual SH$$$$T that seemed to be in Va and in a small part Maryland..That was  untill people like Teets and a bunch of other Shennandoah valley breeders started breeding clubby-and Shorthorns had to exhibit some quality or bring nothing at the sale barn-because no one wanted them-and for the most part-rightfully so. There are also a few in MD and several good herds in PA-Bradley Eismingers sale has some really decent cattle-with Masonoc Village being a good place to look for an all around thick calf-JMO-After that-the nearest ones are in Ohio (Jay Benham is a friend and has great cattle) or Kentuckey-MARTINDELL.-And a very good bull listed by Doc above in Tenn.per example. So-what are 1: your budget, 2-Breeding type and age of bull 3: Calving EPD numbers-and or genetic defect requirements? O0

If it's potential for added pounds in a functional package you desire, check out WhyLee Magni Reg No. 4248716 on the Shorthorn website. He is an ET produced, 18 month old, solid red, virgin bull with EPDs for weaning of 95, yearly of 128 and carcus weight of 51. All are well above the top 1% of the breed. His birth EPD is above breed average, but he still has a positive calving ease score. He is in Tennessee east of Nashville. PM me if you have interest in a reasonably priced opportunity. Delivery could be arranged.

Thanks guys for the different sales.  My cows are lacking in the maternal area.  Most are bred to raise club calves.  Was thinking about the shorthorn to add milk and good growth back into some replacements females. I've learned that the popular shorthorn bulls are great for making show stock but not momma cows.

I've learned that the popular shorthorn bulls are great for making show stock but not momma cows. //// That isnt necessarily the case-need to know the cattle. Cannondale Scotch on cattle visions is popular on top and all performance cattle on the bottom-Red White and Roan along with being a heifer bull is all Oklahoma Range cattle on the bottom that have a little clubbybut those cattle are bred to survive in tough conditions.Little Cedar Final four seems good on BWS-is red reward who doesnt take maternal away and a real good sonneyxcanadian cow on the bottom-no worries with him.Docs bull is all maternal including Lincoln Red -so they will be pretty stout and really maternal-his bull would have been ideal on the cool looking double visions etc that have disappeared. The cow side if they are maternal-really ought to have something stout on the bull side So It depends upon what the cows are-cant tell much from a verbal description O0 O0

Echoing Mark's point, one has to know the whole question before determining the correct answer. I've been foolin' with Shorthorns for almost 40 years. I've yet to find a Shorthorn cow that did not have the genetic capability to produce enough milk to let her calf express his or her genetic potential for growth. Some may be better than others, but any evaluation of optimal milk production must also factor in the environmental conditions and management practices of the producer. I have however, had Shorthorn cows that did not have the genetics to pass stoutness and growth to their offspring. "Maternal" by definition is a combination of milk and growth. (Maternal EPD equals milk and 1/2 weaning weight.) Significant "maternal" improvement can be made by influencing either, or both, milk and growth. In a club calf producing operation it seems the the objective is to find the necessary maternal ability in a phenotypically pleasing package. This is what we are trying to do with a Shorthorn and Shorthorn influenced cow herd. The "showring" selection in the Shorthorn breed over the past many decades makes it easier to find the phenotype we need and if you look carefully you can still find the necessary stoutness and  growth. I whole heartedly agree with Kndcattle in the decision to use Shorthorn genetics to enhance a club calf herd.
