Steers Won't Eat - At Wits End

I need some help. I'm pulling what's left of my hair out here. Here is what is going on. Have a crossbred (900lbs) & a Purebred hereford (1185lbs) steer and am at wits end with getting them to eat. It's like neither of them really want to eat their feed, just want to attack hay and aren't eating...

    help with washing new steer

Just keep working with him. Some calves they need to get used to the process and many will eventually end up liking it. Had one last year that was a bit slower to the process, would kick and do things like that and he eventually he would calm out of it. Just be slow and methodical. About 2 weeks...

Torrington bull? What should I breed this heifer to?

I saw him when he was at Hawkeye Breeders early last summer. I liked him a lot there when I saw him. I have a 3/4 Charolais heifer due to him on April 5th and a really big commercial heifer to him on June 6. We will find out. I will say that the decision was close to breeding between him and...

Looking for Ag Instructor in NE Iowa

It really depends on each individual school district what they have. A lot of Iowa schools have extended days to their contracts but those have been under attack with budget shortfalls. Others have FFA pay put in the master contracts on the supplemental pay scale with coaching salaries and such...

    Cooling alternative?

I have thought of doing this myself and have heard of a guy that has done it. He ran his down the hill from his barn and the opposite end came out near a ditch or creek bank. That way fresh air is always entering the tile. Basically a cheap geothermal. He used a non-perforated tile so that there...

    Steer Bloating up

Have had problems with a steer bloating up on me the last few days. Have not changed his ration at all. Last weekend I got hay that had more alfalfa than they were used to. After he bloated up the first time I pulled the hay from them thinking that was it and have since used some plain grass...

    Show feed

I have a ration using HSC Grand 4-T-Fyer that I have mixed and bagged at my local mill. I have had great results with it. It costs me $22/ton more than what Dan's ration is and that is without figuring in the cost of mineral to his ration. This is all using local prices which people should do...
