Protocol here: http://www.aphis.usda.gov/import_export/downloads/pro_imp_cattle-bison_can.pdf But!!! The Canadian veterinarian performing the export testing and filling out the appropriate forms is responsible for making certain that all t's are crossed and i's are dotted...  The document above...

    Closing the tank CWA sale

Can't speak specifically to the Waukaru 2109/4188 bull, but have used his sire W. Gold Mine 2109 extensively - and with 13.7 CED/-0.5BW, he's a sleep-all-night calving ease bull.  Would have no qualms about using him on anything here, including virgin Angus heifers.

    good old commercial cross

Here's the first SHxAN cow we bred, a Waukaru Goldmine 2109, with her third calf, sired by Long's Shear Pleasure, born 12 Aug 14

    good old commercial cross

Been using several Shorthorn sires (some on recommendation of SP folks) over high % Angus and AngusXSimAngus cows for about 5-6 years.  Have several that look not unlike yours, librarian - but also have enough red-factor cows from the Simmental background that I'm also getting some good red...

    uno mas bull

You could do worse; looks like a good solid SM bull, all around. But, you sure won't be challenging those mature cows with him; calves may fall right out of them if they cough hard or fart.  He's a heifer bull - and I wouldn't hesitate to breed him to any first-timer here. But, still, he...

    amazing apples and genetics N/C

knabe, My principal hobby - outside of cattle -  is growing & collecting fruit & nut trees. The original 'Hawkeye' Delicious was - and still is - a pretty good apple(I've eaten it) - but the myriad of increasingly red & elongate-conical shaped budsports(mutations) that have been selected...

    Fecal transfer

knabe, Fecal tranfer, I dunno, but rumen transfaunation is a known effective technique that's long been used for ruminants that have had broad-spectrum antimicrobial therapy, or have just been off feed for a few days. Much easier if you have access to a cow or steer with a rumen fistula...

Shorthorns role in the cattle industry

Josh, Having spent my entire life in commercial cow calf production - and nearly 30 years involved in predominantly food-animal veterinary medicine pursuits, I've had minimal experience with Shorthorns - just almost never saw them in the areas where I was.  Remember one friend's family having...

    Zilmax and Optaflexx Photos

If that's your goal, you just need to look at double-muscled breeds, like Belgian Blue, Piedmontese. The trait also exists in other breeds, but is not considered a genetic defect in those two... Pretty sure no Zilmax/Optaflex-fed animals ever achieve that appearance.

    Cow in round bale feeder

Have at least one heifer who likes to stand with her front legs in the big tire waterers.  She's probably the one that keeps breaking the float handles. Left one of the poly round bale feeders flipped up out in the pasture behind the house this spring.  Looked out one afternoon to see that...

    Cattle Are Ruining The World

Several things... Cow numbers in the USA are at their lowest since the 1950s... As knabe indicated, cattle on a grain-based ration produce less methane than those grazing - but...cattle were designed to graze, consuming grasses/forbs that are essentially indigestible to monogastrics like humans...

    bantamine

Yes, Ryan, I'm sure you can give a shot with the best of them, and that you're smart enough to read the label instructions. I've been involved in veterinary medicine since before you were born.  I know and understand the pathophysiology of disease, modes of action and pharmacokinetics of the...

5.5 day Sync let me down

Used it last spring on a group of 22 and got 80% conception on one AI service - though we only bred on observed heats. More or less the same group of cows (24) this spring - only 8 demonstrated estrus; pulled the non-cyclers back in 12 days later and popped 'em with Estrumate;  only one or two...

    bantamine

Utilizing the ELDU withdrawal calculator devised by FARAD, a single IM injection of flunixin in cattle increases the meat withdrawal from the 4 days established for (approved) IV injection to over 30 days. ejoe mentioned 'off label use';  I suspect that most people - including many...

    bantamine

Keep in mind, that 4 days slaughter withdrawal time is for appropriate dosage, given by the allowed route - intravenous. Only. If you give more than the approved dose, multiple doses, or give it by an unapproved route - subcutaneous or intramuscular - it's likely that residues will persist...

    banding horns and scurs

Last time we had any calves born with horns(before this current spring's crop) was about 10 years ago.  Took 'em off with elastrator bands.  Worked fine for my purposes, but did have that 'square-headed' appearance - and blunt scur regrowth.  Not an issue for a commercial cow; probably not...

    White Clover

Caledon, You're discussing white sweetclover, Melilotus officinalis; and yes, mold growing on/in sweetclover harvested for hay can cause bleeding problems. However, the 'white clover' SCF is referring to is Trifolium repens, commonly referred to as white/ladino/white dutch clovers - more noted...

    Galant Semen

Every animal on this place traces back to Simmental bulls used back in the '80s - Alpine Polled Proto, DS Pollfleck, DS Polltime, Generation III, ABR Sir Arnold's Image.  Kept back and used homebred SimAngus bulls that concentrated the Proto & Arnold lineages for several generations, before...

    Pour-On Dewormer's burning backs

Good points, jcedvm. Additionally, the pour-ons are really crappy, right out of the gate.  Studies have shown that only about 30% of the applied dose actually gets where it needs to be to kill worms.  They're poorly absorbed, and most of the 'effective' dose comes from the animals ingesting it...
