knabe,
Fecal tranfer, I dunno, but rumen transfaunation is a known effective technique that's long been used for ruminants that have had broad-spectrum antimicrobial therapy, or have just been off feed for a few days.
Much easier if you have access to a cow or steer with a rumen fistula implanted (uncommon, outside of university veterinary teaching hospitals or nutritional research facilities  - but you can get enough rumen flora to get 'em 're-started' by flushing the mouth of a normal, ruminating animal and giving the flush-water to the non-functional animal ASAP.
Think about it - that normal cow is regurgitating up a cud to re-chew it - and the normal rumen microflora are hitch-hiking along.  Doesn't take all that much to get the populations re-established
