Feedback on these Texas steer Judges

I, for one, appreciate your honest opinion.  You sound like you've given a set or two or reasons yourself.  This is an interesting thread and my kids don't show in TX but these guys do tend to show up other places.  It does sound like Callis is the go-to guy and will take that information to...

    Sores on heifers flank

I don't know that you can say it is a bacterial infection without a culture but....  Anyway, you can give her some penicillin, LA, or antibiotic of your choice, and I would treat with ringworm/fungus medications.  If it doesn't respond to the athletes foot spray, switch meds. Go to that section...

    Can it be done?

I think you would get some hair especially this time of the year.  Calves start putting it on in late summer so maybe he'll hair up pretty nice in a month.  I guess it just depends on how much you want to go to state.  Just give it a shot.

    ~~Hard Core~~

Had a reserve champion maine steer in NM last year at the state fair.  Breeder said he was a hard core out of a double stuff bred cow.  Loved the calf.  Red, soft middled, ate good had good hair was about 49-50 inches tall and 1250 lbs.  Finished like a dream.  I would buy them like that all day...

    steer keeps bloating

A 400 lb calf is still a baby.  I would back off of some of the corn and put him on some probios to help his tummy out and feed him a starter ration.  Purina makes some starter feeds and I am sure there are others out there.  That small and they are usually still on creep, grass and mama's...

I agree with others - calves that don't eat hay are generally sick.

How to put 100lbs on a show steer in one month

I know I am not there, but I would keep a good eye on this calf.  It sounds as if he might have had a bug of some sort and is working through it.  It's generally bad if a calf won't eat hay.  I can tell you that you can throw the yuckiest old bale of sticks and leaves out to some cows and they...

22 days till fair and were freakin

you might try the corrid because he may have, or had, a touch of coccidiosis.  I would also feed him a bunch of hay becasue it's good for the belly.  Feeding at night is a good strategy.

How to put 100lbs on a show steer in one month

Boy, if the critter doesn't gain 4+ pounds a day eating all that something is wrong!  That's a lot of food!  I want the calf that will gain 4.2 lbs a day on about half that amount!  Feeding 4 times a day is a good idea though.

    bloating steer

There are several things you can do.  No. 1 is insure him if you can! ;D    I don't know how far out from show you are and what he is weighing, but I would keep feeding him and getting him fat.  If you have to cut back on anything, cut back on the feed and make up the volume in grass hay.  (Make...

Getting rid of ammonia smell in the cooler

We buy a product called PDZ (or something like that) that horse people use in stalls.  Check your local farm and ranch stores or feed stores and they probably carry something.  They are not expensive products either- which helps.

    Would this make a difference?

I don't think 75 days is necessarily to far out.  It's just a matter if you have the time to put into it each day.  Putting ice water in the swamp cooler or foggers is fine, cause it does help drop the temp in the cool barn.  The idea with ice water though is to chill the hide.  If you just put...

    So many choices

If you're not looking to add lots of weight I would add barley and power fuel to his diet.  I don't know how far you are from show, but the last couple months try replacing up to 25% of the show chow with barley and it will add a nice finish to him.  Add a little power fuel and you should have...

    Would this make a difference?

since you are on this track, I'll tell you that yes, you can use ice water to promote hair growth.  If you will just take a bucket of ice water and brush the calf with it during the last 30-45 days, it will really get the hair going.  Especially if you do it a couple times a day.  You don't want...

    A new problem

Hang on fellas.  Heifers can get bred at very young ages.  It doesn't happen that often, but it does happen.  You didn't tell us exactly when you purchased this heifer.  And, the calf sounds like it could be a preemie.  So, the question becomes, how good are your fences?  Could she have gotten...

How often should you Trim Feet on Show Cattle

I agree with the the video.  People trim feet way to much.  Unless you have skilled trimmers working on them, you run a very real risk of hurting your animal more than helping them.  You can ruin a calf real quick with a bad trim job.  We trim ours about twice before show.  Once in the spring...
