    Need help- grafting a calf

Tadpole did one last year and he cut the hide off of the dead calf and tied it over the orphan.  The cow took to it really quick.  Not sure if it's the best way but seemed to be really effective.

    DNA Sampling Question?

Actual BW was 100 lbs. even.  Guess this kinda goes along with the topic of AI bull or clean up bull from a couple weeks ago  (lol)

    DNA Sampling Question?

We had a calf a couple of days ago out of a cow that we bought on a sale this winter.  The catalog said she was AI'd to Nutt-n-Butt and safe to him.  She was exposed to a 734 son.  She calved 16 days late to the AI date based on a 283 gestation period.  Or 6 days early to the clean up bull.  The...

    what's are you doing?

At college and as many of you know your sleep pattern is never the same.  So before I go to bed every night I check sp to make sure I don't miss anything. Always like seeing pics of the newborns

Bye Bye farm Subsidies, OH wait just mine

I wanna say that 500,000 in sales a year is a typo or a misunderstanding.  From what I have heard it will go off your income taxes and if you show over 500,000 in profit then you will not be able to get subsidies.

What does CARNEY MAN work on? What does ACE IN THE HOLE work on?

I haven't had any first hand experience, but I have heard that Carney Man works best on short females otherwise they can get a lot of air underneath them.  That is just what I was told once. I'm pretty sure I have seen some hiefers bred to him so I don't think the calves come to hard.  I haven't...

How many acres for a pair

I'm in Iowa and they say around 1.5- 2 acres.  Had a class at Iowa State and they say with their grass mix and rotation they are down to a half an acre per cow calf pair.  I thought that was pretty cool.

4 days overdue.... What should I due?

I'm from Swea City, but currently in Ames for school. She hasn't claved yet, she looked like she was getting close last night before I left to come back, but we have thought that for a few days lol!  She was starting to seperate herself yesterday from the rest of them so it shouldn't be to much...

4 days overdue.... What should I due?

Thanks xxcc! Ran her through quick tonight and the scabs have fallen off so she is back out in the lot.  The weather has been great up here in north central iowa so we finally got the rest of the snow and ice cleaned out of the lot today now the cows don't need ice skates to get around anymore...

4 days overdue.... What should I due?

Yes , she is now 6 days overdue according to the breeders date (AI).  we talked to him and he said he had one bred the same way that just calved a couple days ago so she was 4 days overdue.  Maybe she will go 295 days.  He didnt' give us much information so we are just patiently waiting now...

It's my brother's heifer, but she is a taz and I can't remember the cow she is out of. As far as the gestation table goes, I'm not really sure... when he bought her the guy just said she would be due on the 6th of Feb.  We thought she would calve last Saturday but no such luck and I'm back at...

    Fertilizer/ Grass Question

I don't have much experience with managing pastures.  I'm a student at Iowa State and when we toured the pastures at the cow farm I learned some very good things as well as info from my other agronomy classes.  I know Texas and Iowa are a long ways away, but here are some good places to start. ...

    Gigalo Joe Calving Ease????

The info on the Nelson's website says the first few calves averaged 68-81 lbs. out of first calf heifers, all with unassisted births.  Went down to the dispersal sale and I think the average of all his calves last year was 78 lbs.  I'm sure more people will have more info, but that's what I know.
