I don't understand why; Can someone please explain ? !

You are extremely correct. Junior show numbers have nothing to do with "big commerical" operations. We are talking show cattle and if there are a large amount of junior exhibitors that means that in the near future those large numbers of juniors will be adults and show cattle breeders, at least...

    monopoly and tiger woods dead?

I must agree with the comment about these young clubby bulls dying young and poor semen quality. I have heard a lot of issues with that, but it's pretty obvious why and i'm surprised more haven't figured it out. These bulls are REALLY young when they start collecting them so they don't have the...

Any suggestions on what to do for show steer with runny loose stools?

Well first off, if you switched him to straw and he quit eating roughage that is part of the problem. Switch him back over to last year grass hay. NO green hay or alfalfa. Take away his beet pulp that makes them loose too. This can help in the mean time until your vet helps you figure out a more...

Well I have 2 calves that you might be interested in. One Shorthorn and one Shorthorn Plus calf. The Shorthorn Plus is a Millpond Exile out of a Commercial Cow. He is very correct made, heavy muscled, deep bodied steer. He has the potential to have a load of hair (he lost most of it due to being...

    Bloat Question

We had a show heifer doing this all spring. She was a super easy keeper and had loads of rib. Same symptoms as you-little bulge on side, no belly kicking, still hungry, and took an hour or two to go away. This happened for about a month and finally stopped happening. If you are really concerned...

    Breaking a steer

Catch him, give him some ace, tie him up and put a feed pan and/or some hay in front of him. Lead him to water twice a day. The ace will calm him down and make him realize no one is hurting him and he wont pull so hard. It just lets them use their brain a little instead of instantly getting...

I don't understand why; Can someone please explain ? !

I am not a Hereford person by any means, but when I see a good Hereford I'll like them. You say that Herefords are hard to find?? Then I say that you are looking in all the wrong places for them because when I was at Shorthorn Junior Nationals, and the week following that was the Hereford Junior...

    Shorthorn Heifer

This is a March 19, 2012 Sin City x Lights Out Shorthorn Heifer I have for sale. She hasn't been on much creep feed; we are going to start pushing a little harder now for WI State Fair. She was the calf of the Grand Cow/Calf Pair at the WI State Shorthorn Show. She can really get around and move...

how are the facilties at Grand Island

I couldn't Really complain about much when we were out there for a week at Shorthorn junior nationals. The one hydrant near us actually broke mid week but they fixed it right away. When we got there tie out space was limited as we had to find room to tie out 7 head, but they ended up putting up...

    Shorthorn Breeding

If you want a Really cool purebresd steer try exile. He is a bull that hueber is promoting. Go on their website and take a look at his pick and you will fall in love with him. I have seen him in person and he can.Really.get out and move so if you get a heifer you won't be stuck with a bad one...

    Sick calf question

In my opinion those are the kind of people that don't need to own cattle because they make the rest of us look bad. Shame on them. If they are irresponsible enough to let a poor calf get that bad they need not own any cattle. How can you expect a bottle calf to just go out and find a cow to...

    Estrus detection aids

If your planning on using chalk or paint, and aren't using it on any show cattle, I would suggest putting it on a little thicker and wider. It makes it just that much easier to tell. If you aren't wanting to watch cows all the time and that is why you are wanting to just use heat detection...

    front feet

Glad I'm not the only one that thinks this! There is hope lol! Anyway, good luck with your steer and I just want to reiterate- make sure you have someone that knows how to actually do corrective trimming Or it wont work and could make things worse. Just do what's right for you in your situation.

    Rear Pastern problem

Well if its getting better she will probably grow out of it.

    front feet

We personally had a Shorthorn heifer that we corrective trimmed and it was pretty bad. With a combination of corrective trimming and good showmanship she ended up a 9 time grand champion female. If you want I can break out the before and after pics to show just.how dramatically it can change one.

    Bottle Calf Issue

At least call and talk to a local vet and see what they say. My first thought on reading this was that he was nursing to fast but if you changed the nipple and it didn't help it probably isn't that. Keep us informed and good luck on getting the little one well again!
