Bacteria in silage and newborn calf death

We've got friends who have just a few bred cows and and they have lost 7 out of 7 calves within a few days of birth.  The vet is saying there is a bacteria in the bloodstream and a bacteria in the feed.  They have been feeding a chopped silage type feed that was grown locally.  My husband and I...

    Can they grow too fast?

Ok, you don't usually see this problem here, but I have a calf that's growing like a bad weed in a wet summer.  He's a march 2010 calf we purchased last fall weighing somewhere around 600lbs.  We weighed him Sunday and he tops the scales at 999 lbs and he's probably 52-53 inches tall (hip). ...

How are Immortal steers doing in shows?

I have seen several Immortal steers that look really good this fall, but I would like to know how they grow out.  Are they winning any shows?  Are there any problems such as structure or attitude?  I heard a breeder say he didn't like Immortal calves and just wanted a little follow up.

What are the judges looking for this year? Trends?

Hi all.  Last summer there was a thread on here regarding the steer show at the Iowa state fair and the reasons the judge gave for the calves he picked.  I don't remember exactly what the comments were but they included how the calf would grade and cutability and the possibility of moving away...

Best Fitting Tips for a Blow & Go Show?

I have seen many grooming tips for all types of shows, but not many for a blow and go.  Our state fair prohibits the use of adhesives and aerosols so I am looking for the best show day tips if anyone would care to share.  Thanks.
