    2019 MoovingForward.ca Bred Shorthorn Sale - Dec 7th

Thanks Mark!  I really should be keeping some of these girls, but we wanted to offer all of our best.  Our bottom cut heifers go into grass-fed beef for decent money so that makes things easy.

    2019 MoovingForward.ca Bred Shorthorn Sale - Dec 7th

Hi AJ, I haven't tested all dams for Myostatin yet, but given ~3 generations of bulls in pedigree are free of all defects, very high likelihood that they are all clean too.  I have to go through the pedigrees of all my dams and figure out which still need to be tested.  All dams are TH free...

    Shorty hf bulls

Hey Coyote, MURIDALE SECRET 12W X-[CAN]F686700- seems somehow familiar to me, was that the moderate red 2 year old in the group of first calvers when I was last at your place?  I'll have to look back through my pics... Bull looks nice.

Ideas for cattle tag numbering system

I like to use the Year letter code (so 1Z etc, her tatoo will be MIDA 1Z) - Sire ABV above and Dam/cow family below on management tag.  Glad this thread was started, I like the idea of incorporating dam's numbers... not sure how I would do that now.  Guess it depends on whether cow family info...

Grazing corn stalks with lots of corn....

We have grazed whole standing corn in the past during the winter - Dec > Feb ish when the ground is frozen.  Just partition a portion off each day with electric fence (+a guard fence for the next move so if they get thru the first fence they only get double what they should have, not the entire...

    herd bull fertility drayson

It's an awesome book - all bull breeders should own it and evaluate testicle structure as he advises - we are generally too accepting of sub-standard structure in this area...

Breed Opinions for Grass Fed Beef Operation

The right type of shorthorns will work well - and do for me.  Moderate easy doing type - I'd stay away from the maine influenced show cattle (which kind of makes the club calf side operation completely antagonistic to their goals in my opinion). Generally as was said small / moderate framed...

    Anybody ever bail green cornstalks?

It has been done, I would recommend a crop chopper on the baler (and sharpen the knives first).  Think the process is cut with mower, let it sit a day ish to dry down a bit, then bale and wrap.  Guys seem to say it works well.

    Hay Prices in your area

Top quality hay (dairy quality) went for 14 or 14.5 cents a pound ($319/ ton) in SW Ontario at auction.  Very expensive! 1st cut hay crop up here was 50-60% of normal, alfalfa hit bad with early march warm spell then frost kill back, and now 2nd cut looks very poor given lack of rain... Glad...

    What is a desirable carcass?

Loaded question I think... I would say it would be hard to find an ideal for all.  Things like grids/premiums/discounts that packers put out there are driving what are good for them (not necessarily you) - which may not result in the best animal to feed or ideal momma cow base (they don't care...

    Mad Cow in cali.

I think this may be a case of the original cause of BSE vs massive spread of BSE (feeding contaminated feed)...  theory goes that there will be some random mutations in any national herd, so a few minor isolated cases are to be expected from time to time.  There are some very interesting and...

    Shorthorn Bull

Nice looking bull XBAR.  I try to stay away from horns, but definitely still have some that turn up every once in a while ;)  I'm a fan of the Dover breeding.  (clapping) Apparently you can tell quite abit about a bulls life (fertility impairements) by looking at the horn growth and colour. ...
