    Shorthorn bull

I kept a bull I raised out of Roanoke Flashback and used to breed heifers for a couple of years. At the time I wasn't too excited about the calves (other than no birthing problems with heifers always good). This spring I'm looking at cows in field and realized that the five 4-5 year old cows I...

    Shorthorn on line registry system

What do the shorthorn breeders on this board think of the new on line registry? Am I the only one that finds it difficult to use? I have worked with computers for 20+ years so have a pretty good grasp on most things but it seems everything I do is more confusing.

We are changing our herd away from Shorthorn

Had interesting conversation with local farmer a week ago. He has been operating a "grass fed" beef operation for several years. He is very high on shorthorn cattle for their ability to finish on grass. Where he surprised me was when he spoke of crossing the shorthorns with a Jersey. He said...

    pink eye Iodine

I recall some time ago there was a post that said adding iodine to mineral mix greatly aided in eliminating pink eye. Does anyone recall how much should be added? I also thought there was a search function for this board but am blank on finding it

    another question about CIDR

I am in process of getting my AI schedule set up. I have one cow (5 year old) that calved later. If I put her in the AI group, I will be inserting the CIDR 39 days post calving. Am I wasting CIDR and semen to try that soon or is it worth trying to move her up?

    Shorthorn Registration??

Sometime in last year I saw stats regarding % of data they got from WHR herds; it wasn't that high. It seems to me they should have worked on getting present WHR members to report their data before forcing everyone into it. Like I mentioned before it doubled my cost to register and i was already...

    Shorthorn Registration??

I appreciate the need for data but really resent that I was forced to go to WHR. I always provided all BW and WW for every calf but only registered ones not going to feed lot. Now that I must pay for every female, my cost to keep herd registered has doubled! I inherited a herd of cows that was...

BISS ELEMENT 79 370Z National Champion Shorthorn at Denver

I looked up EPD's on these bulls; Bw for one is 4.6 and other is 5.3. Is everyone comfortable using bulls with EPD's this high?

    cull cow prices

I have read many columns on how many cows are being culled due to the drought in Texas. I would think this would create a supply/demand problem and push the cull cow prices down. However for the ones I've sold this year, I am getting 50% more than two years ago (I'm in Ohio). what gives???

    Is attitude heritable?

I have a very docile herd. I don't worry too much when tagging and weighing calves; mothers will ball a little and come running but very seldom enough to worry me. Two years ago I was tagging a calf, didn't think about it and let mama get behind me. next thing I knew I was on the ground. I...

    What is your agriculture story?

My grandfather left Pennsylvania to seek his fame and fortune in Oklahoma (Hobart); After a few years at my grandmothers insistence he moved back east and purchased a farm in Ohio in 1920. He brought 7 shorthorn cows and a bull on the train with him. 90+years later the only outside cattle that...
