70% of our heifer feed for show females on the road is composed of pre con and winning fill. Belly is largely genetic I won't undermine that but those products have treated us well
Any tips on what to look for in a young heifer for having a big belly as a big heifer? That would help greatly in picking a show heifer to buy!
Well, it helps if they start with a pretty big belly. But more importantly, it's a certain shape, and sweep to their ribcage, and a propensity for never really looking too full, at least on normal feed volumes.
Honestly, the #1 key to finding a heifer with a big belly, is finding one with perfect feet and structure. Very sound ones can add so much volume and mass as they mature, as they aren't fighting their bodies to add weight. And they have a lot less stress due to being uncomfortable all of the time. I'd say that our best heifers are the easiest ones to take care of from day one, from a structure and body standpoint. It's insanely hard to get the big, sweeping, "larger than life" volume without structure.
I can post pictures if you'd like, but I don't want to grandstand on someone else's post.
