My daughter has a brahman heifer who is now 14 mos. old.  The breeder told us that brahmans should be bred at around 22-24 months.  Now, I have someone telling my husband that is not true, and you can breed them at the same age as any other beef heifer - around 15 months.  My husband wants to turn her out with the bull, but I have threatened his life if he does.  I would like to hear from American cattle experts on this subject.

Thanks!

American cattle are generally slower to sexually mature than British/Exotic breeds.  I don't think it would hurt her, she'd just be unlikely to start cycling as early as other breeds.

As soon as a bovine reachers about 60% of their mature weight, regardless of age, if they are cycling they are ready.

Don't count on the 15 month deal, be you be closer to 22.  You need her in good shape so I don't think I'd get near turning her out.

What did you see that gave you any indication of what shape the heifer is in?

Brahman cattle need to be what most people would call fat to get along in the show ring.  These cattle feed different than English or continental breeds.  You turn her out for say 3 weeks to get her exposed and that's 6 weeks you lost in the feeding process.  Top that off with puberty not coming as fast, you come close to a decision on showing or staying home.  Time And a lot of patience go along with the Brahman cattle.

Cowman you are right about losing that finish.  It's hard enough to get it on a Brahman in the first place, I hate to take the chance of losing what we have.  I'll put a lock on the gate ;)
