Longtime listener first time caller here…

I couldn’t help but bring this up.  Unless you’re living under a rock, or not interested in Shorthorns, you’ve probably seen the massive offering on Sire Buyer.

It’s obvious this is Merl’s tank, RIP.

I haven’t seen something like this come on the market before.  I find it interesting that there is so much demand.

The questions I have are - what would you try again out of this group and why, what is it worth, can you answer without bashing any of the bulls or breeders (aka the high birthweight chi’s),  what else is hiding in other tanks out there?

…the drawing is Dreamboat.  Apparently he was so ugly when he got older they never published a photo.

I owned Lazy D Ultimate Type and GR Cop Top Trampass and used an ET son of Boris out of Bonnie Ruberta (Deerpark Leader 18th daughter) at one time.  I purchased Ultimate Type as a calf from Lazy D, later sold him to Duane Sicht, and Merle Welch purchased most of the semen at Duane's sale a few years later. For many years he was an ASA balanced trait leader.  The photo you provided was taken in our orchard.  I bought Trampass from Merle and thought he followed Ultimate Type as being near perfect in conformation for the time.  Ultimate Type was a direct son of Highfield Una 3rd and Trampass was a grand son.  Both bulls worked extremely well for me for many years and I would not be afraid to use them again.  The Boris son was not used as much, but his daughters were absolutely magnificent cows.  He was very moderate in size.  I tried many other bulls on the list and liked the calves I got out of all of them.  There are some good bulls on that list and Merle deserves much credit for developing them.  I last saw him at the Missouri sale a few years ago and had a good visit with him.

Always liked the way Ultjmate Type looked.  Was he too moderate for the frame score era of the 80’s.  Seems like good genetics that got left behind because of a fad.

Yeah, old Robin donor cow.  Wanted to post the pics on here and hear some thoughts, but you have to be a member and I couldn’t think of username, almost went with Dreamboat haha.  I’m not affiliated w green ridge, just an anonymous former customer - I assume there are a lot of us still around who enjoy Shorthorn nostalgia.

Found a couple more from the list.  The red ones are the Ash Valley Duty’s, the better looking one is 0734

I added a couple bulls to the tank and missed out on a couple others. I was surprised how much people were willing to pay for the bulls I didn't get. It would be interesting to know where some of the volume buys went and how they plan on using it.

This bred heifer is out of an Ultimate Type cow.

Forgot I came across this one.  JDS Fireman was Maine sired by Power Plant. Looks big, but interestingly has an 11 CED and 2.7 BW epd, for what that’s worth.  Majority of his registered Shorthorn calves were at Rocker Bros who were 50% owners w possession according to ASA.

and has shaver nelson on the bottom, a good thick bull. if i were to use him, i would not use him on anything with pencil guts in the background.  twin creek etulason, power plant's sire is extreme.

Mainstream (picture on first page) is by Twin Creek Etulason and out of Robin R180 (Impact II/Columbus).

This is a quality female. Would love a couple with her type in my herd!

Some of the higher BW genetics dilute well--for instance, Rodeo.  Astronaut is in the last generation of JJC Wild Side's pedigree, and Wild Side sired only one calf that required assistance at birth for us.  High Hope in the pedigree of these two Ash Valley bulls, and they have sufficient growth along with commendable calving ease.  Through selection pressure many breeders have successfully reduced birth weights, while maintaining growth.
