Has anyone bedded on carpet at a stock show. I saw a ad today where straw and shavings are not  permitted. Thanks for your input

Most of the time if its a show where you have to be there for a while and absolutely have to leave the cattle over night, then if they say no straw or shavings they generally have you bedding on sand which blows out very easily, so I generally just bed them on the sand.  I have never used carpet to bed one, dont know how it would work, to me it seems like it would get bunched under them and be really really messy.

Don't use carpet/fake green stuff.  I feel this way because I had a very bad experience with that stuff.  Our calf we had primed to compete at state was walking into the ring at state and the calf slipped on the carpet and fell.  It couldn't hardly walk in the ring.  We were in first place when the judge put us in order by structure but when we walked around the ring we fell to 5th.  I would never recommend using carpet unless your putting it where you sit, store all your stuff and the calf will never walk on it.

A lot of the junior association shows in Iowa won't allow you to bring bedding or straw.  At most of these shows we tie at the trailer and yes we use carpet and it works great.  We use tent spikes to keep it in place.  Have never used carpet in a barn.

We have bed cattle down on turf before mainly at sales. It always worked good for us but you do have to secure it down so it won't scoot and you need to be there so when they crap you can pick it up right away. When we get home we throw it over a fence and power wash it and let it dry.
