We placed the extra lamb we had from the fair on Craig's list a place for classifieds and this morning we got an email saying "that is so RUDE and UNKIND to raise an animal and then tell people she would make good meat!!!  what's wrong with you... don't you have a heart!!  that's disgusting and you should NOT BE ABLE TO HAVE AND RAISE ANIMALS!!!!!!!"

This is after we explained the fair process to her and that we rescue horses and we rodeo.
"I did grow up in the city and I do eat meat but not from the animals I would raise and show at fairs!  Not ALL animals seen at fairs are butchered for meat.... some people have pets that they raise and love and take care of.  But I guess you wouldn't know anything about that would you?!"I'm proud to be a "city slicker" and I'm sure I know more about the world than you do.  If you just live on a farm your whole life and go to fairs how much of the world could you possibly know?  I have nothing against rodeo people but I wouldn't put you in that category.... you belong in the dumb-a$$ idiot category."

Then i told her i don't appreciate her being ungrateful to people who raise beef for her to eat and there is practically a science to raising good cattle.
"Jeff foxworthy makes fun of people like you that don't know how to function in the real world so they stay on their farms all their pathetic lives. The only thing you've gotten down to a science is how to use a rake and sleep with your relatives... that is what hillbilly's do best and just like you said, your one of the best at it!"

This is ridiculous. I was just wondering if anyone else has gotten anyting similar it happens around here all the time between the rescue horses and market animals.

It never seases to amaze me how people that are so ignorant actually believe that they are rocket scientists and far smarter than us "Dumb old ranchers" that just come to town once a year when the fair is in town. I'm sure that they never dreamed that there are Doctors, lawyers, and assorted other highly educated people in the livestock business. I'm reminded of this every time I go to a major show with cattle. You see them walking down the isle in their new boots and cowboy hat that they just bought at the fair and sooner or later one of them will ask if they or one of their kids can "pet" your cow. This usually is followed by a series of bizar questions that even your 5 year old daughter knows the answers to if she has ever been to the barn. I do my best to educate these individuals as to the reality of the cattle business and that yes sooner or later most of these animals will end up on a plate or between two buns. It is our responsibilty to try and inform the general public as well as we can for the simple reason that they are the majority of the population any more and most of them think their meat comes from a grocery store not your ranch or farm.

to quote a previous post, this one is teed up for you, take a deep breath,

welcome to the real world renegade.  this debate is encapsolated in the horse slaughter legislation.  the method is one of incrementalism.  this is going on with socialized medicine.  first there was medicaid and medicare for the first group.  next comes health care for children of families making under 41K a year which is the current ploy.  thankfully the president has stated this is hillary care light.  so with horses, they have incrementally removed options to "get rid" of horses.  this deflates the value of horses, and will place pressure on all the industries that "feed" off of horses.  this is what they want, they want capitalism to disappear and do socialism better, without all the death and other stuff.  They want to go back to an agrarian hunter gather lifestyle and are doing a better job at indoctrinating our you, as they have the schools completely run by socialists and PC nuts who want nothing more than to rid the world of america and blame it for everything.  the thing they need the most is education, but since they are already to old to ever educate themselves again, all they offer are emotional circular arguments based on feelings.  Since they reject heaven, and the concept seems appealing, they seek to create it on earth and lie with the lion.  they are shocked that the lion will eat them, yet they lay down again, with the same result, over and over and over.  you must find a way to get involved politically, either run yourself, find a candidate you can support, and hopefully they can be neither D or R, as that concept has run it's course.  provide information to people as you have attempted, and refine your delivery till you find what works.  seek fact based information.  a place to start is the omnivore's dilemna.  conversion with facts is a great feeling.  also try, "why do you have to use names", ask them what is the consequences if we don't produce food? and what is the energy and safety ramifications of that.  can organic farming really feed the world, can all cattle be grass fed, figure it out and follow where the information takes you, you will be amazed at how hollow and incentive free communism and idealism in general is.

Renagade, you cant let idiots like that get under your skin and bring you down. Being farmers is a way of life wether you raise beef or you raise corn, if wasnt for people like US, this city slicker would have to pay a good bit more for fuel. This retarded lady who says she eats meat but not from animals she would raise obviously knows nothing about responsibility and dignity. She obviously dosnt know that the majority of lambs and goats, pigs and beef come from our county fairs where market animals are sold to help young kids like me and you get a little cash to put into funds or buy things to help you out through life. Tell her about how the BREEDING animals are taken home and live long nice lives on the farm and fairy tails about how wilbur the pig wasnt eaten because he was to cute and fern wanted to keep him and happily ever after.

Staying on farms because we cant function...Let me tell ya where she would be with out all the meds made from by products of beef or her leather things etc etc. I dont stay on the farm all my life, ive been to columbus to watch the expo and other neat things.

I would personally give her my whole hearted anger to her on the phone and never make contact again with this person. But wherever you go in life there are gonna be pea-brained people like this nagging at you and calling you a murderer of animals.

P.E.T.A (people eating tasty animals  ;D ) saves animals and stuffbut when it comes to there veggies, where does the fertilizer come from....

if she tries to contact you again via email or whatever tell her to kiss off and find a life worth living

We got your back

easy farmboy, these are the very people who need to be converted, and i submit it is worth the energy.  if you convert someone like this, then they will convert someone else.  we need to learn to be ambassador's and win the hearts and minds of the people who eventually by our products, yes even vegans who i sell eggs to.  they need to see that it is about choice, not dictatorship.  we in general have not done well winning the hearts and minds of city folk who only know us through subsidies, especially the new farm bill where pelosi raised the cap for payments from a suggested $200,000 to at least $1,000,000 per family or spouse per year, i can't remember.  95% of the subsidies go to people who aren't "family" farmers.  if this isn't destroying our credibility, i don't know what is.

I am with you farm boy! These people make me so mad! It is ridiculous because we live in SW Idaho everyone and their mom owns market animals. but it is kind leaning towards califonians (no offense if you are from there) but we get the people from the big cities that are super rich and don't know anything and don't listen to anything you say.

I didn't follow a lot of what road warrior was saying (call me dumb) but i just didn't follow i think it is because i am so tired from fair still and weigh in is the 16th for Western Idaho so it begins again or maybe it is because i am a dumb hillbilly(lol) ;D.

best thing in this case to this particular individual is to just ignore them and if they email you any more, mark it as spam and block them from contact.  ;)

Great topic Renegade. I live and work in the city of Dallas, TX as a chef. I help perpare everything that is served to the customer. Everything that goes out to the dining room for people to eat and hopefully enjoy comes from agriculture and all the people involved in it.

It's very normal to be angry at people's ignorance. As a chef, I get tired of these people asking me if it's healthy, natural, organic, antibiotic free and even if it tastes good. Sometimes I lose my patients and just tell them;  "I intentionally made everything taste bad today and the farmers and growers do whatever the can to produce an inferior product."  I also follow it with, "My fellow friends in agriculture  have worked very hard to give you something they feel is a very good product and I too have worked hard in prepairing it. If you don't like what we have worked so hard to make, (I suggest to them) that perhaps you would like to try the wonderful  Restaurant down the the street called McDonald's."

City people in general have become jaded and oblivious of how food gets to their tables. All they know, it is always there.

That's good advice - i don't like to lose anyway but i always have to have the last word(bad habits die hard). Call me a sore loser. :) I just hope cattle don't become an animal on the endagered list and corn doesn't become a protected species of plant.

true story

woman moves to the country
immediately begins to complain about the neighboring dairy
a neighbor says to her that the dariy provide the milk she drinks
she says "I don't need to get my milk from the dairy I go to the supermarket"

morals of the story - most people haven't a clue where their food comes from
you can't argue logic or science with people dealing with emotion and ignorance
educating ignoranct people with preconcieved notions is always difficult
never underestimate the power of peta to utilize their vast resources and emotion to force changes in the livestock industry
don't sell animals for food on craig's list

This is an opportunity for you young 'uns on here to really pay attention to issues facing agriculture, and, to react. You are our nation's ( with fewer than 2% KNOWING ANYTHING about food production, or rural lifestyles) future leaders. Knabe, you are the most intelligent, resourceful thought-provoking member on this site.  :)

Thanks Garybob for reiterating Knabe's wonderful post. It's well worth reading and I understood it's importance better the second time.
