I know there was a band that played out at the National finals all the time. They were pretty much for adult audiences only. They were always fun and popular but I can't think of their name.

Ouch, you are to old for that red. ;D

Actually it was about 30 years ago . I was down in the front & a fight broke out. Of course coordinated me got pushed down. I got kicked in the ribs. almost broke one & had a footprint on them. Then about a month later the Who concert stampede happened. I remember hearing on the radio & pulling over & got sick.

I find this thread funny in that it was titled Cult type bands.  Sadly many of these bands are all that I listen to.

I am huge fan of the Red Dirt Scene based out of Austin.  The music out of there just sounds a lot more like the country music I grew up listening to, as opposed to the pop rock stuff out of Nashville.

Bands that rock include:

Randy Rogers Band (my favorite band on the face of the planet, I have seen them in concert around 8 or 9 times now)
Cross Canadian Ragweed (a slightly more rock sound that most that play red dirt scene, but everyone needs a little rock now and then)
Wade Bowen
Brandon Rhyder (fantastic songwriter)
Cory Morrow
Stoney Larue (exploded on to the scene a few years ago, the guy can play a pedal steel like noones business)
Roger Creager
Aaron Watson (out of college station I believe, just a great fiddle and steel guitar sound)
Jason Boland
Hayes Carll
Charlie Robison
Pat Green (his older stuff, his new stuff is much too Nashville for my liking)
Reckless Kelly (the Braun family has so much talent it is ridiculous)
Micky and the Motorcars (the other half of the Braun family)
Eli Young Band
Josh Grider
Johnny Cooper (this kid is 17 or 18, and has been playing in bars/clubs since he was 15.  He writes all of his own stuff like nearly everone on this list)
Jack Ingram (once again his old stuff is better than his new)
Kevin Fowler

Then the old faithfuls

Jerry Jeff Walker
Robert Earl Keen
Willie Nelson (his new stuff has really been out there lately)
Ray Wylie Hubbard
Billy Joe Shaver

and of course the man the myth the legend.

Waylon

It is kinda amazing that jerry jeff and willie are still alive. Jerry got married to the senators daughter or whatever and saved him probably. Willie is like 70 some and he has done enough drugs and what ever to kill the 82nd and 101st airbourne division ...yet he is still alive. I went to a bar concert in like the late 70's around Hays Kansas. Jerry jeff was playing there. I was in college(freshman 17 years old and I went to it. Half of the bar were cowboys and the other half were roughnecks(oil patch) and a few bikers. I was sitting in the middle of this thing scared to death and waiting for all hell to break loose. Well xxxxxxxxx in the wind song came on and there were roughnecks and cowboys slapping each other on the back and buying each other beers and singing and what ever. The roughnecks loved jerry jeff and they are a salty bunch of boys. It just seems like jerry jeffs music didn't fit into any category except he told stories. Pop music is great but there is so much good stuff out there that doesn't make the top 40. I know I should shut up. ;D

No need to shut up aj, I for one, enjoy those kind of stories. I've never seen Jerry Jeff live, but I did see David Alan Coe, Willie and Waylon all on the same ticket once. I was probably 18 at the time (I'm thinkin '84...) and it was at the Lloyd Noble Center (on the OU campus - no alcohol (well, theoretically anyway)). I'd never seen that many bikers at one time before, and when DAC was playing, I swear I'd never seen so much hair on one stage (and I'd seen a few of the so called "hair bands" of that era, too - they didn't even come close to DAC's crew). It was a great show though, and despite the mix of bikers and cowboys, relatively peaceful...

You're absolutely right that so much of the good stuff never gets any radio play. There is still some good stuff there, but 90% of the time I'm either listening to my ipod or cd's (usually Red Dirt or something old), or if I am listening to the radio, it's usually the classic rock stations. I love threads like this 'cause if I hear of an artist that sounds interesting, I'll look them up. Most of the new (to me anyway) music I listen to I find through things like this...

I'm not familiar with the names on this list but one rings a bell. Isn't there some more popular type song that gives some type of credit to Robert Earl Keene in the lyrics?

After losing so much sleep to this for the last two weeks, I finally asked one of my buddies (a red dirt guy) what song I had heard Robert Earl Keene mentioned in the lyrics of. He just spouted it off the top of his head in about .25 seconds, "That's the Beer Run song from Bob and Tom". He said the comedian's name but I forget. Todd something I think. For those who might not know, Bob and Tom is a syndicated radio morning show. They play a lot of parody songs and stuff by comedians. I remember this song as one of the better ones. It has nearly the same chorus (B- Double E- Double R-UN, Beer Run) as the popular country radio version, but came out way before that one.
