To clarify - there are 2 TH mutations and now both mutations are checked for when TH test is requested. Used to be that Outcast TH was extremely hard to do with the Improver test, but improved technology allows for both alleles to be tested at the same time. So now when you request a TH test both alleles are checked for and a THF report means neither the Outcast of Improver mutation was identified.

aj agree 100%  ;)

Thanks DL, this was my doubt just now....so TH show two differents mutations and if they test for one and not for another, a clean 1 TH can carry the another one TH gene.....but, as you clear....now, labs make one test that reaches both TH genes.....great!!

So, some old bulls/cows tested as clear on past, can show the gene.....make open eyes with old tested animals!!

I think that the best way to make "honest" on this matter is a mandatory test for all registered calves....will not clean the Shorthorns. of course not, as human being has a greater attraction for money than for honesty, but is a way to make the breed clean at a basic level.

You proved my point jill. IF your new to the maines or shorties or clubbies, then you would have no idea about TH/PHA or monkey mouth or SP. Some think we shouldn't ever bring up these defects when discussing certain bulls, certain bloodlines, but there is ALWAYS someone who honestly DOESN'T know. Education is the key.
Funny how going outside and doing work will take away phone and internet time.... I had heard through the grapevine, but didn't get the single test "rumor" clarified.

And God forbid, jill I actually agree with you on DNA'ing every single calf that is to be registered, but remember the arguement that everyone uses as an excuse.... "its too expensive" whine whine whine.    But I deal with several breeds and can say this isn't a maine issue, it is a show cattle isssue!!!

AJ, I love it. "Just test the damn cattle."  I love it.

Expensive for me is lose actual or potential customer for bred a herd with carriers or potential carriers.
How many tests do you pay with a pair bulls sold annually!
Testing all "damn cattle" calves at registration will bring more confidence on the breed and on the herd!

I think there is a roaring waterfall that the show biz is headed for that no one is taking seriously. That would be public opinion. Public opinion has changed the beef industry and cattle are cattle.
All it would take would be one documentary on the connection between TH and show champions, showing some people counting their money on top of a pile of dead calves and heartbroken kids to turn the hearts and minds of most people against the industry. Seems like it would be wise for the ASA to become crusaders for reform before the boat crashes into splinters and all the treasure floats away.
We have all this technology...do I understand correctly that the defective alleles can be SNP'd out of semen and replaced with something benign?

Librarian....I think you have a point about a negative documentery done on the defect calves. I watched real sports by bryant gumbo tonight....on hbo. They did a piece on how dogs shows have changed the bulldogs look and made them unfunctionable. I keep waiting for 60 minutes to do a piece on display bulls in Denver or something. Some disgruntled fitter could make some dough. If a piece came out about airing the bulls.....drugs.....early deaths of the bulls....whatever. Defects. It would probably hurt the beef industry even if it was strickly a club calf story.

I watched a documentary on defective people who are always negative and never produce anything.

The show running right now is about aj.
