I’m considering making a road trip in search of a heifer. I’m looking for either a Simmental or Foundation Simmental, or a Charolais or % Charolais. We’ve been at this a long time and I’d consider us a good home for one. It’s my daughter’s first year as a junior and we want to do it up right. I need one that will be darn tame and we want to be able to hunt in one of those divisions at jackpot shows in OH. Probably will do 6-8 shows this fall and winter thru the Ohio Beef Expo, then take the heifer home and try to make a club calf donor cow out of her, in the long run. There are a couple in IA that I have had people tell me I need to see. If I was to go out from western OH taking I-70 to Indy, I-74 thru IL, then 34 thru southern IA, going about as far west as I-35, then on the return trip taking I-80 or 30 back east thru IA, does anyone have any fairly along the way that might be worth me stopping to look at? Send me an e-mail or PM. Thanks!

BTW, considering next weekend, the 26th-28th

Wish you were looking for an Appendix Shorthorn, we're 30 minutes or so from I 74.  I might be able to locate a couple % Simmi's.  I'll get back to you if you would liike.

Illini Elite sale is on Sunday the 21st at Rinker Simmental just south of Shelbyville. Curt has several really nice simm and percentage simm calves. Fox Creek Simmental is selling choice of a couple of half bloods that are really good as well. Would be worth your time. Great to work with in both cases. Good Luck on your search.

If you are looking for a real good PB Char or char X,  I know you don't have Nebraska listed but the Fred Ranch from the Sandhills would be well worth a call.  Jamie has over 30 hd on his sale and he is loaded with heifers.  Jamie goes by Freddy here on the Planet.  This is the first time he has had his own bid-off for clubcalves and you could sure find a great char female for the money.  He has flushed several top char donors to clubcalf bulls. Give them a call.

Great people, great cattle and beautiful country.  I don't think he has pictures up but you can get his contact info from his site. Check out his site.

I hope to be going through his calves in the near future, if I can help let me know.

I've the got the perfect heifer for you. She's a solid red Heat Wave out of a Jazz cow; dead broke and a huge amount of hair. First time I ever had her in the barn I broke her within 30 minutes, washed her, and blowed her out. Clipped her without a shute because I was too lazy to drag the shute out and she didn't even budge, she loves being combed and has also loves a rodo brush! I'm wanting $1000 out of her; PM me if you want a picture because as of the moment I'm too lazy to go out and take a picture without much interest. I kind of don't want to sell her since she's so tame, but money talks!

She can be regestered as a maine-tainer.

Thanks for all the great replies! Keep em comin! (PM's and emails are even better)

As far as breed goes, I'm pretty set on that Simmy or Char thing for a few reasons. First, I have sold (and have a few more that I will sell this fall) Crosses, a Shorthorn, Chis, and at least 1 Mainetainer, to pretty regular customers who expect to do pretty well at the same shows that we'll go to, so I don't want to go out and get a smoker in one of those divisions. Second, I think that those divisions are a tad easier to be consistently good in in OH. Not that there aren't any good ones at the shows, just that I think I can spend a little less money for a real competitive %Char than, for example, a Maintainer or Shorthorn that would do just as well in those breeds. And lastly, this is ultimately an investment  in my daughter's first cow. I want it to be a donor that will last for a long time. Probably not gonna go a very clubby bred route (avoiding Heatwave and Heatseeker), unless it's a flat great one, b/c we want to be able to breed/flush her to those type bulls on down the line.

Thanks again!

Our local fairgrounds(Northwood, IA) will be the site of some sales that might be of interest to you.  This is a little farther north than you indicated but it might be well worth the trip.

The Northern Exposure Charolais sale will be held here on October 11th.  The Reserve National Junior Champion heifer came out of this sale last year.

We also host the  North Central Simmental Sale here in November which has produced numerous winners over the years.  Pangburn Stock Farm, a well known Simmental breeder, is also located just north of town.  You may have heard of the famous PSF Bertha cow line.  This is where she was born.

We also host a Club Calf sale the first Sunday in November each year.  We've had State Fair Champions and Reserve Champions come out of that sale in the last couple of years as well.  Almost all the calves in this sale are raised by small, local breeders.

You never know, if you have time to stop by and see us while you're here we might even convince you to look at a Shorty, Shorty Plus, or Maintainer.

There's also a nice, new Country Inn & Suites just off I35 next to the Diamond Jo Casino.  We have two great places to eat as well---Signature's Supper Club in town and the Woodfire Grill (new steakhouse at the casino).

Stop by if you can.  I'd be happy to show you around!!

Have gone to see two here in OH and they were very nice, both 1/2 Sim, very different from one another, but both very nice. Am in the process of planning a route to see some of the many more that people have told me about this coming weekend. Had a super visit with a SP regular and saw a real nice set there and great people too.

One thing I wanted to say was thanks to everyone for all of the help and heads up sent my way! I have had two offers from ppl here on the Planet to sell me heifers that they had planned to keep and weren't even offering to others. Great community of Planet dwellers here! THANKS!
