I have followed this forum for a long time but have never felt the urge to participate until now. I agree with most of the previous comments, however I could not help but notice how Edwards talked about soundness but apparently failed to notice the steer he eventually picked for reserve grand was IMO a cripple. There were better cattle sent back to the barn. With that said, I 100% agree with jbh regarding the prices of the cattle at the top. It absolutely refreshing to see good families with moderatly priced cattle make it to the top. As a breeder I'm excited to see how this affects the sales this fall.

Help with the show, donate big money to the IA 4-H Foundation, 4-H scholarship recirient, being a IA St Fair board member or politician, being fast enough to escape a spooked steer. I sure felt sorry for the kid with the spooked steer. Sounds like nobody was seriously hurt thnkfully.
Look at that spotted Char steer. Isn't he a dandy?

Sounds to me like the Iowa State fair got back to the basics. Brad's statement about all that depth has gotten so outlandish it's crazy. We don't need the shotgun types from the 70's or 80's,but the past 7 or 8 years have been ridiculous. Same for the heifers in alot of cases. Most of the really deep bodied heifers you see can easily hide behind a fence post. Won't name any breed. I'm glad to hear the deep pockets got rocked a little.Sounds like there wasn't much or any halter judging going on. In some places, even if the judge has a two year contract he would be fired for doing such a good job.

I thought the quality of calves at the fair was excellent. Maybe some of the breeds were off some from in the past, there was some dandy calves sent back to the barn, but "we' did not have the priveledge to feel all of them through the fluff. I enjoyed the comments and the job the judge did.

Hats off to ALL the famiies that busted rear all year, and made for a great show.

I also heard that the Ch. breeding hfr. was a home raised calf. Congrats. That to me is a huge feather in your hat!!

I think thats awesome that some of the top steers were home raised and beat out some of the big $$$ steers. Thats the way this industry needs to goes. Winning with a 2500$ at state fair in my book is pretty phenomonal!!!! Congrats to those exhibitors!!

I'm not from IA either but I too have enjoyed reading this thread. We've been fortunate to have a good bit of success with steers that we didn't have to pay an arm and a leg or a first born for.

I had heard that the GC was a Eyes On The Money, but I talked to Steve Downing this weekend and he said that the GC was a Heat Wave X Ma X Sm.
Has anyone heard how the sale of Champions went this year?

Sale was a little down this year.  Ferguson's Grand Champion Steer went for $25,000, Becker's Reserve Grand Steer went for $18,500, Wasson's Grand Market Heifer went for $28,900 and Kohlhass's reserve market heifer went for $21,300..

jbh - GREAT, GREAT POST

I don't necessarily agree with everything done last Wednesday.  However, I too agree that the money situation on these high $$$ steers has gotten out of control.  Quite frankly, it's driving kids to do other things.  I've talked to several kids that just don't have the money to be competitive with steers and they end up showing sheep or hogs.  I guess as demand decreases it will drive prices down.  The unfortunate side to that is that the number of calves at these types of shows will decrease as well.

How were the numbers at the State Fair compared to last year?  Anyone know?  I know that at our County fair we were way down from the previous year.  Kind of a disturbing pattern.

I helped check in all the market animals last Monday and the number I heard was right at 300 head(steers and heifers).  Unfortunately, I don't know how that compares with past numbers.

I am not sure overall all, but 2 records were set at the sale of champions. If I am correct it was a hog and market heifer. Means a big thumbs up for all the supporters and those youth that went out and got "local support".
