My grandma made me a deal my first year showing, that as long as I kept her barn clean, I could keep my show calves in it. Well Ive fixed up the barn since then, made it look really nice and fit to house calves in (and even she has said it looked nice) but yesterday, my grandpa and uncle decided to shoot rats that are trying to take over the barn, well neither my dad nor me had a problem with this, but when I went to feed this morning, my barn was completely TRASHED. My blocking chute was shoved against the door, all my hay was scattered across the barn, feed bags everywhere just about everything was out of place. And what really made me mad was that all the show calves were LOCKED OUT. They couldn't get to there feed they had for the night. I said something about it and they both refused to pick it all up. So after feeding, I had to clean the entire barn along with clean the stalls all morning. And this afternoon when I went to rinse the calves for the night, I had just put the first one in the chute, and they ran me out.

This just made me mad. Thought i'd see if anyonelse has gad this problem?

And with me only being 15 theres not much I can really do about it

Well, call me a "witch" but if the deal was "I clean the barn and fix it up, then I get to keep my calves in it", I would get a paddlock, and keep it locked unless I was there working with my calves.
Ol' Gramps and ol' unk would just have to get over it.

Your lucky all the shooting didn't spook your calves and something end up hurt.

Sometimes you just have to work as best as you can around other people.  Your age and situation are not ideal, and those two fellas are not likely to care much about your show calves.

Here is what I like already about you:  your ambition, your work ethic, and your desire to have better.  These traits will serve you well in the future, even though right now you have some adversity to overcome.  Keep a positive attitude, keep working hard, set goals, and before you know it you will have your own barn and property.  Don't let these guys get to you too much in the meantime.

Oh yea,  figure out when these guys sleep (I'll bet they are not early risers), and rinse your calves then.  Outsmart them!

I would talk to grandma and have her take care of gramps and the other rascal  ;). If you're grandma is like most she'll be able to take care of it. My grandmas got a cane and it aint for walkin'.  ;)

And if all else fails get a cat or two and your grandpa and uncle wont have rats to shoot at.

Yes, that is messed up, I know my grandma wouldn't put up with that. I don't think you should put up with that, if nothing changes, see if you can't find a different place to keep your calves at. For the rats, if you don't have cats you have to worry about, use D-Con.

Sorry for the mess.

Wow! I just could never see my grandpa and uncle ever do that. That is very inconsiderate to others and their property, let alone it is his own barn.

Wow!! I thought I was the only person that had problems such as this. Only take out gramp's and but in a boyfriend. I show out of his barn and lets just that that I don't have any say so what so ever in how the animals are feed, clipped, shown or anything. IF I try to change things he flips out and says if you don't like it move your steer. I buy the animals, I buy the feed, and I keep the barn clean. grrr... lets meet in the middle and build our own barn... haha well hows about I come to you... Missouri is getting old. (lol)

Well. I had my dad and Grandma talk to them last night, because they went in my bran again but it was clean when they left, and my calves were still scared and they had no care about them, and didn't bother to move them, or call me to have them moved so they were shooting while the calves were around.  I went up, checked them all out (but they were all fine) and moved them around pens, to make sure they were safe for the night. My dad is bringing home a cat tonight (a friend of his had one) and we went to town today and bought padlocks. So I'm hoping this keeps them out.

And also my Grandma told them since I'm the one who keep it clean, I have all rights to what happens in there, they didn't like that. lol
