My favorite barn kitten was mauled by my blue heeler. he is still alive but dragging his rear legs. the hubby let me bring him into the house. He is trying to stand a little so there is some improvement. He also purrs when petted & is alter. He does cry when I try to move him.
Am I being cruel keeping him alive? Do you think he'll recover? Since he's a barn cat we hate to spend a lot of $'s by taking him to the vet. Any suggestions or advice?

he's gonna recover.  cats and dogs are like tongues.  i grab my pups by the scruff in front of the cat, growl, bark, turn them over, till some submission sets in, usually quickly.  when they look at them i growl.  they get the message.  kinda like a moderator.

he's getting around the floor some. Such a sweet kitten I was hoping to find him a good home.

Is he moving his back legs?  If he is, then watch to make sure that he is going to the bathroom.  Most of the time mauling won't break a back but there is a chance of the bladder or intestines rupturing.

hmm.  humans, hmmm, some humans, have determined that paired relationships do best for clear understanding of rules, whereas dogs have not yet evolved from a pack hierarchial structure whre the bread winner is supreme, followed by a lead female, a series of females, followed by a bunch of females and males (if allowed to remain).  males improve their bread winning skills by being forced off alone with themselves or other bachelors where they can learn the value of enhancing their own skills both hunting, and with teamwork and to reap the reward of their skill as well through companionship as opposed to the stakes being too high with constant battle with the lead dog.  it's a path of least resistance.

wolves, the ultimate dog whisperers, employ this technique to good effect, standing over the subordinate, and after submission, not hitting, then lick and play with the offending party.

i'm thinking if i growled at you red, i'd get a 1" breaker bar up the side of the head.

I will say "don't take this the wrong way" but I am sure it will be....

Did you punish the dog that mauled the kitten? Or will it be allowed to repeat its offensive behavior??

Agree with inthebarn.....might have internal injuries.....feed soft food and see if it gets "passed"......and if it has control of "passing".....

Kitten is moving all over house. He's urinating & having bowel movement. I think his back quarter was bruised. not sure if he'll be 100% but at least he's going to make it.

Yes, the dog was punished. Unfortunately it's part of his makeup. We've lost too many cats to him. However he's just too old to be retaught.

KK is not amused! he hardly comes out of his room & when he sees the kitten he hisses.
The other night the kitten was sleeping on my lap. Killer jumps up for lap time. He sees kitten & of course hisses. Woody Decides he needs to join in & I had all 3 on my lap fighting.
BTWm Woody is very jealous & guards me from kitten.
