I am looking for some suggetions on who to breed our blue roan cow to. She is a THC and PHAC  :(  so who ever we breed to it has to be both THF and PHAF. Since she is a carrier I hoping to get a really nice steer calf from her. She is out of Double Stuff. Here's a picture of her and her first calf. Thanks for any suggestions!!!!!!! ;D

1st of all I love the heifers udder. As far as sires I think Hairy Bear should work well for you or maybe Hannibal.

Are you wanting shorthorn plus calves? Final Solution is clean. If you are going clubby, Shockwave is clean heatwave son. Harrah's were very honest about the calves so I am going to give him a whirl this spring. Dr. Who, Sin CIty would give bone and some body.

SKF- Often times just breeding good bulls to good cows doesn't work. I once had breeding explained to me as being an art. What are your goals for the next breeding. What are you wanting to add to your cow. For me, I'd like to see more to her. I think she could be deeper throughout and have a larger bone circumference. Also in the picture her topline looks questionable, but her head is up so that could be deceiving. If I were you, I would look for a bull that consistently sires thickness, muscle, and bone that won't sacrifice her other qualities, femininity, udder, etc. I'm not so familiar with clubby bulls that would do this, but I sure could give you a list of Hereford bulls  ;)

I agree with you with the exception, there are several shorthorn bulls that are clean that would work. That is always my first question - what are you breeding for? We have had luck with Sin City. He does clean up the front end, add some bone and hair. It looks as though she is pretty fine made just needs some stouten up. WIth that may come calving difficulties, thus you have to match them up carefully. Sonny blood lines seem to click with the stuff's well. There are several Sonny son's that are clean and you may consider sonny himself but of course with a price. Stay with the Shorties! ;)

Jordan,

NOT Hannibal on that cow, you need a cow with a ton of guts and he'll make a great one. One of those Heatwave/Century Touchstone bulls (Not Monopoly, but another brother) is double free. Got to have something that will ad body, thats not so easy. He may not be as powerful as Heatwave, but how about that Angus + bull Apex bought from Duff? Or how about Gigolo Joe? Or another Maine bull that will help in the body department and is clean? Dirty Hairy?

Here is the Cow as a 5 month old calf.  Definitely not finely made or fine boned.  She had a strong, level topline.  I think the cow hasn't recovered yet from raising that first calf.

My breeding philosophy was always by gut instinct.  I've not seen any calves by Rocky Balboa, nor have a heard any reports about the bull.  I like what I see in the pictures, as far as how he would work on larger framed cows, and I also like his genetics.  My gut says, try him.

What was her first calf out of?
As far as how she is made, pictures are deceiving but from the picture she doesn't look like she is heavy boned.

I'd go something purebred and almost excessively deep bodies.  Angus - why not something from an Ohlde bloodline.  PB Charolais or black Simi from a commercial line might be interesting also.

The cow has been out to pasture on grass since having her calf. She is does not have fine bone just the way the picture looks. She always has a good topline she has just been nursing her calf. She's a big cow we just brought her in from the pasture for a show recently and she took 3rd and was Grand Champion heifer at our county fair back on Feb. 1.  Her first calf is out of our old herd bull who was a Power Plus son. This time when we breed her we really want to get is a show steer so I was thinking a clubby bull perferable black or something that could possiably give us a blue roan like her.  So far thanks for all the suggestions!

A close friend had a blue roan very similiar to yours, Out of Moody Blues(Back to Double Stuff I Believe) and they had great luck flushing her to Strictly Business and ednde up with roans.  I would try something maine with a fancy front end.  Dr. Who, Dr. Business(Gives you Strictly Business on dam side, Dirty Hairy.  Ive seen a very nice one out of DH this year.  Not out of a blue roan but threw a fancy one n good fronted.

I have to agree with Dirty Hairy. We are going to use him on our blue roans this year also. Must admit though, Dr Who would also be a great choice, but I am talking club calf possibilities here.
